Try this in order:
- Check Surface updates in the Surface app
- Open Surface app > expand Help & support.
- If updates are available, select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install them.
- Detach and inspect the keyboard
- Unplug the Surface and detach the Type Cover.
- Check for debris, damage, or anything blocking the connection.
- Reattach it so all magnets touch the bottom edge of the Surface.
- Confirm whether the keyboard is connecting
- Press Caps and Fn a few times.
- If the LED lights do not turn on, that points to a hardware issue and the next step is to submit a service order.
- Force restart the Surface
- Select Start > Power > Shut down.
- After it turns off, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds. If the logo appears after a few seconds, keep holding until it appears again.
- Turn the device back on and test the keyboard.
- Test in UEFI to separate hardware vs. Windows issues
- Turn off the Surface and wait 10 seconds.
- Press and hold Volume Up, then press and release Power.
- Keep holding Volume Up until the UEFI screen appears.
- Try the arrow keys there.
- If the keys work in UEFI but not in Windows, the issue is likely software on Windows.
- If it works in UEFI but not in Windows
- Go to Start, type reset, then select Reset this PC.
- Select Keep my files > Cloud download.
- This reinstalls Windows, keeps personal files and apps that came with the PC, and removes settings changes plus apps and drivers that were installed.
- Check Accessibility keyboard settings
- In Windows 11: Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
- Turn Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, or related keyboard settings on or off as needed.
- If keys repeat, drop, are damaged, or still do not work
- If a key is stuck or repeating, inspect for debris and use compressed air or gently vacuum with a dusting brush.
- If keys are cracked, damaged, missing, or the keyboard continues to repeat or drop keys, submit a service order.
- If Windows was installed from a custom or clean image
- The keyboard may need drivers installed manually from the latest Surface driver package for that Windows version.
