Detach the keyboard from your Surface Pro.

Inspect the magnetic connector and the contacts on both the keyboard and Surface for dust or damage.

Wipe the contacts gently with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not use liquid.

Reattach the keyboard firmly and restart the Surface using the touchscreen.

    Detach the keyboard.

Select Start → Power → Shut down and wait until the Surface is completely off.

Press and hold the Power button for 20 seconds.

Reattach the keyboard and test it.

If it still fails, test the keyboard in Surface UEFI:

Shut down the Surface and wait 10 seconds.

Press and hold Volume Up, then press and release Power.

Keep holding Volume Up until the UEFI screen appears.

Try the keyboard's arrow keys to navigate.

If the keyboard works in UEFI, the problem is likely in Windows or its drivers.

    • If it does not work in UEFI either, a keyboard or connection hardware fault becomes more likely.

    Try this in order:

    1. Check Surface updates in the Surface app
      • Open Surface app > expand Help & support.
      • If updates are available, select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install them.
    2. Detach and inspect the keyboard
      • Unplug the Surface and detach the Type Cover.
      • Check for debris, damage, or anything blocking the connection.
      • Reattach it so all magnets touch the bottom edge of the Surface.
    3. Confirm whether the keyboard is connecting
      • Press Caps and Fn a few times.
      • If the LED lights do not turn on, that points to a hardware issue and the next step is to submit a service order.
    4. Force restart the Surface
      • Select Start > Power > Shut down.
      • After it turns off, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds. If the logo appears after a few seconds, keep holding until it appears again.
      • Turn the device back on and test the keyboard.
    5. Test in UEFI to separate hardware vs. Windows issues
      • Turn off the Surface and wait 10 seconds.
      • Press and hold Volume Up, then press and release Power.
      • Keep holding Volume Up until the UEFI screen appears.
      • Try the arrow keys there.
      • If the keys work in UEFI but not in Windows, the issue is likely software on Windows.
    6. If it works in UEFI but not in Windows
      • Go to Start, type reset, then select Reset this PC.
      • Select Keep my files > Cloud download.
      • This reinstalls Windows, keeps personal files and apps that came with the PC, and removes settings changes plus apps and drivers that were installed.
    7. Check Accessibility keyboard settings
      • In Windows 11: Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
      • Turn Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, or related keyboard settings on or off as needed.
    8. If keys repeat, drop, are damaged, or still do not work
      • If a key is stuck or repeating, inspect for debris and use compressed air or gently vacuum with a dusting brush.
      • If keys are cracked, damaged, missing, or the keyboard continues to repeat or drop keys, submit a service order.
    9. If Windows was installed from a custom or clean image
      • The keyboard may need drivers installed manually from the latest Surface driver package for that Windows version.
