My video camera does not show me, it appears to be on (the white camera light is on) but does not show my image when I connect? Any guidance you can provide would be appreciated. Thank you.

If the while light is working on the webcam, that usually indicates the webcam is working but disabled.

    1

Look at the function keys (F1 - F12) on your keyboard, if one of them has a camera icon, press that key or Fn + that key to unlock the webcam.

    2

If that was not the problem, look at the camera lens above your screen, is there a small privacy slider that needs to be opened to access the webcam?

    3

    Open the Settings App.

Go to Bluetooth and Devices - Cameras - Integrated Camera.

Click the Edit button in the Advanced Camera Options section.

On the resulting dialog, enable the option to allow multiple apps to access your webcam.

    4

If the webcam is still not working, go to the support page for your laptop on the manufacturers website, then from there, download and re-install the version of webcam drivers they provide.

If you have any difficulty locating that support page, click your Start Button, then just type msinfo and press Enter, please provide a screenshot of the resulting System Information window.

Check and fully open the physical privacy shutter beside the camera lens first, because it can block the image while the white activity light remains on.^1^

    1. Check the camera’s physical controls

    1. Look closely around the camera lens for a small sliding cover and move it completely open.
    2. Check the laptop’s sides and top row of keys for a camera switch or camera-icon key.
    3. If there is a camera key, press it once. Some models require Fn + the camera key.
    4. Reopen the video application and check the preview.

Windows documents that the camera control can be a keyboard key, side switch, or shutter integrated beside the lens.^2^

    2. Determine whether Windows or only one app is affected

    1. Select Start, type Camera, and open the Windows Camera app.
    2. Check the result:
      • Your image appears: The camera hardware and Windows driver are working. In the video-call application, open its video settings and select the correct camera. Also close other applications that might be using it.
      • The preview is black, blank, or unavailable: Continue below.

Testing with Camera distinguishes a Windows-wide problem from an issue limited to the conferencing app.^2^

    3. Enable Windows 11 camera permissions

Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera, then turn on:

    • Camera access
    • Let apps access your camera
    • The switch for the specific app, if it appears
    • Let desktop apps access your camera for browsers, Microsoft Teams, and other traditional desktop applications

Desktop applications cannot be enabled individually from this page; they use the single desktop-app setting. If Camera access is greyed out, an administrator must change it.^3^

Test the Windows Camera app again.

    4. Run the troubleshooter and update the driver

    1. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
    2. Find Camera and select Run.
    3. Then go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
    4. Open Advanced options > Optional updates and install any available camera-driver update.
    5. Restart the PC and test Camera again.^2^

    5. Reinstall the camera device if the image is still absent

    1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
    2. Expand Cameras. If it is absent, also check Imaging devices and Sound, video and game controllers.
    3. Right-click the camera and select Properties > Driver > Uninstall Device.
    4. Select Attempt to remove the driver for this device if offered, then select OK.
    5. In Device Manager, select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
    6. Restart Windows and test the Camera app.^2^

If the problem began immediately after a driver update, use Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver instead, when that button is available.

For an external USB webcam, also try another USB port and test it on another computer. If it fails there too, the webcam likely needs manufacturer support or replacement. If an integrated camera remains missing from Device Manager after scanning for hardware changes, obtain the camera driver from the PC manufacturer’s support page; continued non-detection may indicate a hardware-level problem.
