Microsoft 365 purchased automatically after a trial is activated by signing in with the Microsoft account used for the purchase; Microsoft does not normally send a separate activation code.
Activate Microsoft 365
- Open the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page.
- Sign in with the same personal Microsoft account used to start the trial.
- Find Microsoft 365 Personal or Microsoft 365 Family and verify that it shows an active subscription and the expected renewal or expiration date.
- Open Word or Excel on the Windows PC.
- Select Sign in when prompted, then use that same Microsoft account. If already signed in under another account, go to File > Account, sign out, and sign in with the purchasing account.
For Microsoft 365 subscriptions, the Microsoft account replaces a product key for installation, reinstallation, and activation.^1^
If the subscription is not listed
Check whether the payment was completed under a different Microsoft account:
- Open Microsoft account order history.
- Select Payment & billing > Order history.
- Set the date range to include the end of the trial.
- Look for the Microsoft 365 charge:
- Completed or Redeemed means the purchase was posted.
- In progress means it has not yet been posted to the payment method.
- If more than one personal Microsoft account is used, repeat this check under each account. Microsoft advises using the account associated with the purchase.^2^
If the charge is completed but the subscription is absent or has the wrong date, contact Microsoft Support from the support page while signed in. Choose Microsoft 365 and Office, then the billing or activation option, and request chat or a callback. Have the order number and payment confirmation available. Microsoft directs Microsoft 365 Personal and Family customers to Support when the online renewal status is incorrect.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID]'re-still-getting-notifications-after-renewing-or-buying-microsoft-365 "A subscription notice appears when I open a Microsoft 365 application | Microsoft Support")
Only if purchased from a retailer
If this was a physical box or product-key card bought from a retail store—not an automatic Microsoft trial conversion—the subscription may require the 25-character key from the card or the link in the retailer’s email receipt. Check the receipt and junk-mail folder, then redeem it at Microsoft365.com/setup.[^4^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID]'t-working "Problems renewing a Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft Support")
