Critical localization/translation bug in Windows 10/11 GPO (LocationAndSensors.adml) reverses policy logic
Hello. I would like to report a critical translation error in the Russian language pack for Windows 10 and Windows 11 Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc). The text in the "Help" section for the location privacy policy is completely corrupted and states the exact opposite of the actual OS behavior, causing severe confusion for system administrators.
Policy Details:
• Path: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Location and Sensors
• Policy Name: Turn off location (Russian: Отключить расположение)
• Source ADMX File: LocationSensors.admx
• Affected ADML File: LocationSensors.adml (inside the ru-RU localization folder)
• Registry Key Controlled: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\LocationAndSensors!DisableLocation
The Contradiction:
- Original English Logic (Correct):
• Enabled: The OS sets DisableLocation = 1. Geolocation is blocked.
• Help Text: "If you enable this policy setting, the location feature is turned off, and all programs on this computer are prevented from using location information..."
• Disabled / Not Configured: The OS sets DisableLocation = 0 (or deletes the key). Geolocation is allowed.
• Help Text: "If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, all programs on this computer will not be prevented from using location information..."
- Russian Translation in Windows 10/11 (Broken):
The localization team completely failed to translate the double negation ("will not be prevented"). As a result, the Russian text states:
• Enabled (Включено): "Если этот параметр политики включен, функция расположения отключена, и все программы... могут использовать сведения..." (Translates back to: "If enabled, the feature is disabled, and all programs CAN use location information...") -> This is false.
• Disabled / Not Configured (Отключено / Не задано): "Если этот параметр политики отключен или не настроен, все программы... не могут использовать сведения..." (Translates back to: "If disabled or not configured, all programs CANNOT use location information...") -> This is false.
Impact:
Because of this typo, Russian-speaking IT professionals who want to comply with privacy standards or troubleshoot DCOM errors related to Location Provider Manager are systematically guided to select the wrong setting.
Windows code executes the policy correctly based on registry values (1 or 0), but the UI help text is completely inverted.
Requested Action:
Please forward this ticket to the Windows Localization / Language Pack Team so they can update the LocationSensors.adml file in the ru-RU directory for upcoming cumulative updates of Windows 10 and Windows 11.
(Attached are two screenshots demonstrating the correct English Help text from Windows 11 and the broken Russian translation from Windows 10).
