Enable Microsoft XPS Document Writer first, then rerun Intuit’s QuickBooks PDF & Print Repair Tool; QuickBooks Desktop on Windows 11 uses the XPS component for this PDF workflow, and Intuit lists this sequence for the exact “Missing PDF component” error.^1^
1. Restore Microsoft XPS Document Writer
- Close QuickBooks.
- Open Settings → System → Optional features → More Windows features.
On some Windows 11 builds, Optional features appears under Settings → Apps. - Select Microsoft XPS Document Writer, click OK, and restart if prompted.^2^
- If it was already selected:
- Clear its checkbox and click OK.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Windows Features, select it again, and click OK.
Microsoft documents this remove-and-reenable sequence as the repair method for XPS Document Writer.^2^
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners and verify that Microsoft XPS Document Writer now appears.
These changes may require a local administrator account.
2. Run the QuickBooks-specific repair
Using the current QuickBooks Tool Hub:
- Open QuickBooks Tool Hub.
- Select Program Problems.
- Select QuickBooks PDF & Print Repair Tool.
- Wait for it to finish, reopen QuickBooks, and test the same PDF operation.
This tool specifically covers “Missing PDF file component” and “A component required to create PDF files is missing.”^1^
If XPS disappears or cannot be enabled
Check whether Windows protected print mode is active. That security mode removes XPS and other unsupported software printers.^3^
- Open Settings and search for Windows protected print mode.
- If it is enabled, disable it only if QuickBooks PDF creation requires XPS, restart Windows, and reinstall XPS through Windows Features.
- Security warning: disabling protected print mode reduces print-system protections. On a managed work computer, consult the administrator first. If practical, re-enable it after testing—but doing so will remove XPS again and may make this QuickBooks workflow unavailable.
Determine whether the remaining fault is Windows or QuickBooks
Try printing a simple Notepad document to Microsoft XPS Document Writer:
- XPS file is created: Windows’ XPS component works; continue with Intuit’s article sections for resetting Temp-folder permissions, updating QuickBooks Desktop, and repairing the QuickBooks installation.
- XPS printing fails: run the Windows printer troubleshooter from the Get Help app. Microsoft also documents restarting Print Spooler through
services.mscfor Windows printing failures.^4^
Because the earlier fixes were unsuccessful, avoid repeating them indiscriminately. If Tool Hub still fails while the XPS test succeeds, use Intuit’s linked procedure for Temp-folder permissions, followed by Update QuickBooks Desktop and Repair QuickBooks Desktop in that order.^1^ Application repair may also require administrator credentials.
If Windows cannot restore or print through XPS even after the printer troubleshooter, capture the exact Windows error code and Windows version from winver, then escalate as a Windows optional-feature problem. A Windows in-place repair should be treated only as a final Windows-servicing option—not as the initial QuickBooks fix.
