A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
This matches a file-association problem in Windows, where Word documents are not associated correctly with Word.
Try these steps in order:
- Run a Quick Repair for Office.
- Select Start.
- Type Control Panel and open it.
- Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the installed Office product.
- Choose Change.
- Select Quick Repair, then Repair.
- Manually associate Word files with Word.
- Select Start.
- Type Control Panel and open it.
- Select Programs > Default Programs.
- Under Set a default for a file type or link type, enter the Word file type and choose Word as the default app.
- Select OK.
- Repeat for other Office file types if needed.
- If multiple versions of Office are installed, uninstall the versions not needed.
- Open Control Panel.
- Choose Uninstall a program.
- Select the Office version to remove.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart the computer.
- As a workaround, open Word first, then open the document from inside Word.
- Start Word.
- Select File > Open.
- Browse to the document and open it.
If a specific Word file still will not open, try Word’s repair option:
- In Word, select File > Open > Browse.
- Select the file.
- Select the arrow next to Open.
- Choose Open and Repair.
