Activate the desktop version of Word with the same Microsoft account that accepted your husband’s Family invitation; the old documents do not need to be synced or converted.
Activate Word with the shared subscription
- Confirm the Family benefit is attached to your account
- Open the Microsoft Services & subscriptions page.
- Sign in with the exact email address used when you accepted the invitation.
- Microsoft 365 Family should appear as an active subscription shared with you. Microsoft confirms that accepting and joining a shared subscription provides access to desktop Word and the other Microsoft 365 apps.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Someone invited you to share their Microsoft 365 subscription")
- Sign the desktop Word application into that account
- Windows: Open Word → File → Account.
- Mac: Open Word → click Word on the menu bar → Sign Out.
- Sign out of any old, expired, work, school, or different personal account shown in Word.
- Close all Microsoft 365 applications.
- Reopen Word and select Sign in or Activate Office.
- Use the same account that showed the shared Microsoft 365 Family benefit in step 1.
Microsoft’s activation instructions require signing in with the Microsoft account associated with the subscription.^2^
- Test an existing local document
- In desktop Word, select File → Open → Browse and open one of the documents stored on the computer.
- The “Subscription Required to Edit and Save” banner should disappear, and the document should become editable.
- You can continue saving it in its existing folder. Moving it to OneDrive is optional.
The fact that Word works in a browser but desktop Word requests a subscription indicates that the desktop installation has not recognized the shared entitlement. It does not mean that the older documents are incompatible.
If Microsoft 365 Family is not listed
The invitation may have joined the family group without activating the subscription benefit for the account being used. Ask your husband to open the Microsoft 365 Sharing page and verify that your exact email address is listed as sharing the subscription—not merely as a family-group member. Subscription sharing supports up to five other people, and the invitee must use the invited email address for the shared subscription.^3^
If it is not listed, he should remove the incomplete share and send a new sharing invitation to the Microsoft account you intend to use. You have already accepted an invitation, so only repeat this process if the benefit itself is absent from Services & subscriptions.
If the benefit is listed but desktop Word remains unlicensed
Reinstall Microsoft 365 from the account that holds the shared benefit:
- Uninstall the existing Microsoft 365/Office installation.
- Sign in to the Microsoft 365 Apps page with your Family-covered account.
- Select Install apps and install Microsoft 365.
- Open Word and complete activation with that same account.
Microsoft provides separate PC and Mac installation and activation procedures.^4^
On Windows, if reinstalling does not resolve it, run the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter on the affected computer. Microsoft also recommends checking for multiple Office installations because they can create activation conflicts.^5^
