Plug in the microphone before opening Case CATalyst, then set it as both the Windows Default Device and Default Communication Device and disable Exclusive Mode.
- Close Case CATalyst.
- Connect the microphone or audio input device.
- Open the classic Sound window:
- Windows 11: Search for Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Sound → Recording.
- Windows 10: Right-click the taskbar speaker icon → Sounds → Recording.
- Right-click the intended microphone:
- Select Set as Default Device.
- Select Set as Default Communication Device.
- Select Properties, and configure:
- Listen: Clear Listen to this device.
- Levels: Set Microphone to approximately 95–100; increase Microphone Boost if necessary.
- Enhancements: Disable audio enhancements/effects.
- Advanced: Clear both Exclusive Mode options.
- Select Apply → OK, reopen Case CATalyst, and test AudioSync.
These are Stenograph’s recommended Windows recording-device settings for Case CATalyst AudioSync.^1^
If Windows detects the microphone but Case CATalyst does not
Check Windows microphone permissions:
- Windows 11: Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone
- Windows 10: Start → Settings → Privacy → Microphone
Turn on:
- Microphone access
- Let apps access your microphone
- Let desktop apps access your microphone
Case CATalyst is a desktop application, so the desktop-app permission is the relevant setting; individual desktop applications might not appear separately in the app list.^2^
Also close applications such as Zoom or Teams while testing. If virtual audio cables are installed, verify that the physical microphone—not a virtual cable—is the Windows default recording device. Stenograph lists virtual-cable configuration and default-device selection among its related AudioSync troubleshooting areas.^3^
If Windows does not detect the microphone
Test outside Case CATalyst first:
- Windows 11: Settings → System → Sound → Input, select the microphone, and run Start test.
- Windows 10: Settings → System → Sound → Input, select the microphone and speak while watching Test your microphone.
If the device is absent or the input meter does not move:
- Right-click Start → Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio device → Uninstall device.
- Select Attempt to remove the driver for this device on Windows 11, or Delete the driver software for this device on Windows 10, if offered.
- Restart Windows so it can reinstall the device.
- If it does not return, open Device Manager, right-click Sound, video and game controllers, and select Scan for hardware changes.
- Install the latest audio driver supplied by the computer or audio-device manufacturer if Windows still cannot recognize it.^2^
Driver removal temporarily removes that audio device, so note its model and obtain the manufacturer’s driver before proceeding if it uses specialized hardware.
If Windows records successfully after these tests but Case CATalyst still does not recognize AudioSync, the remaining issue is application-specific; use Stenograph Technical Support and provide the Case CATalyst version, Windows version, microphone model, and whether Windows’ microphone test succeeds.^4^
