Hi Mishaal,

I completely understand how frustrating it is when an app crashes right in the middle of your study session. Let’s get this fixed quickly and safely.

🚨 CRITICAL FIRST STEP: Do NOT uninstall the app yet! If your recent study notes haven't synced to the cloud because of the crashing, uninstalling the app will delete them permanently. First, go to onenote.com on a browser (or your computer), log in, and make sure all your latest notes are visible there.

Once you know your notes are safe, try these steps which usually fix iPad crashing issues:

Fix 1: The "Reset Credentials" Trick (Solves 80% of sync/crash loops) Corrupted login data is the most common cause of iPad crashes. Let's clear it safely:

  1. Force close the OneNote app (swipe it away from the app switcher).

Open your iPad's main Settings app.

Scroll down the left menu and tap on OneNote.

Under the "Reset" section, tap Reset OneNote.

Turn ON the switch for Delete Sign-In Credentials. (Do NOT turn on "Delete All Notebooks").

Reopen OneNote, sign back in, and let it sync.

Fix 2: The "Massive Page" Problem Since you are studying, did you recently insert a very large PDF, a long PowerPoint printout, or hundreds of images into a single OneNote page? iPads can run out of memory (RAM) trying to render massive pages, causing instant crashes.

The fix: Open OneNote on your computer/web, create a few new pages, and cut/paste parts of that massive PDF into separate, smaller pages.

Fix 3: Close Unused Notebooks If you have notebooks from previous semesters open, they are eating up your iPad's memory in the background.

Long-press on notebooks you don't need right now and select Close This Notebook. (You can always reopen them later from OneDrive).

Try Fix 1 first and let me know if it stops the crashing so you can get back to studying!

    Greetings,

It's unfortunate to hear that you are experiencing such crash when using one note on iPad.

There are different causes that could result in such behaviour of One Note here below are possible reasons to have One Note crashing:

    • Kindly try to login on one drive online or One Drive on your computer to confirm if the issue is only on One note in general or app itself.
    • If you are able to access One drive on computer or online version with no challenges, that would inform that the issue is on the app itself.

Here below are the possible cause to have your one app crashing:

1/ Device capacity: It may happen that the iPad storage is full or processing capacity of the device is reaching to the maximum so that it couldn’t be able to run One App.

Tip 1: Check the iPad storage using below steps:

    • Open Settings on your iPad.
    • Tap General.
    • Tap iPad Storage.

Check if there is not enough storage, free up some space.

Tip 2: If you are running many applications simultaneously may result in poor performance of the Application, kindly close unnecessary application when you are working on One None

2/ Outdated version of One Note application or iPadOS version of the iPad.

Tip 1: Kindly ensure that you have latest update of the One Note application by checking on Apple Store and Update it.

Tip 2: Kindly check if your iPad is running the latest version of iPadOS by checking on below steps:

    • Open the Settings app.
    • Tap General.
    • Tap About.
    • Look next to iPadOS Version to see your current software number.

If you are not running the latest version of IOS, Kindly update it and follows the below steps:

    • Open the Settings app.
    • Tap General.
    • Tap About.
    • Click "Software update"

3/ This issue might also cause by syncing problems whereby the online version of One Note fails to sync with One Note app or vice versa. If the issue is not resolved by the above steps, please consider below options.

4/ Uninstall app and install it again: this helps to release caches that could have contributed to make an app keep crashing.

5/ If the issue is not resolved by the above steps, it might be the device issue, so you need to go further and kindly try to login in on another iPad device to see if the issue is still the same. Kindly let me know if this is helpful.

Open the notebook in OneNote on the web or another device first, verify that your latest notes are present, and then troubleshoot the iPad app without risking unsynced study notes.

    1. Protect your notes and keep studying

    • Open the affected notebook through OneNote on the web or another device.
    • Check that recently edited pages appear there.
    • Until the iPad app is stable, use that version for studying.

Do not delete OneNote, reset all notebooks, or enable Delete All Notebooks until this check is complete. Removing offline notebooks can discard changes that have not synced, although notebooks already stored on the server are not deleted.^1^

    2. Update and restart OneNote

    1. Open the App Store, search for Microsoft OneNote, and install any available update.
    2. Update other installed Microsoft Office apps as well, because they share the same Office identity on iOS.^2^
    3. Open the iPad app switcher and swipe OneNote away to close it.
    4. Restart the iPad, reopen OneNote, and leave it in the foreground while the notebooks finish syncing.

    3. Check iPad storage and notebook size

Go to iPad Settings → General → iPad Storage → OneNote.

    • If the iPad is nearly full, free some storage and retry.
    • If OneNote uses a large amount of storage, close notebooks you do not currently need.
    • If only one large notebook crashes, reduce the number of pages or sections, or move a particularly large section into another notebook. Large pages containing many PDFs, pictures, or other attachments can also reduce responsiveness.^3^

Wait for current notebooks to finish syncing before doing substantial editing.

    4. If the crash occurs while signing in or syncing

Reset only the stored credentials first:

    1. Go to iPad Settings → OneNote → Reset OneNote.
    2. Enable Delete Sign-In Credentials.
    3. Close OneNote from the app switcher.
    4. Reopen it and sign in again.

This recreates the Office credentials without selecting the more destructive Delete All Notebooks option.^2^

    5. If it still crashes

If the web copy contains all recent changes, note these details before reporting the issue through OneNote → Settings → Send Feedback:

    • iPad model and iPadOS version
    • OneNote version
    • Whether it crashes at launch or only when opening one notebook/page
    • Whether the page contains a large PDF, recording, image collection, or other attachment
    • Any error code displayed immediately before the crash

If only one notebook or page triggers the crash, continue using the verified web copy and identify the most recently added large content before considering a full local reset.
