My word document is stuck in draft mode, if I click on print layout it doesn't do anything.

This isn't every document, just two (at the minute), any suggestions on how this can be fixed? screen print

This usually means those two files have a document-specific layout problem rather than a Word app-wide problem.

Try these steps in order:

  1. Switch back to Print Layout again using a different path:
    • View tab > Print Layout
    • or use the Print Layout button on the status bar if available
  2. Check whether the document has a damaged break near where the display changes:
    • Stay in Draft view.
    • Go to the area where the document starts behaving oddly.
    • Look for Section Break or Page Break entries.
    • Delete the suspicious break, then switch back to Print Layout and test again.
  3. If the file still will not render correctly, move the content into a new document without carrying over the damaged layout:
    • Open a new blank document: File > New > Blank Document.
    • In the affected file, copy the content.
    • Paste into the new file as Keep Text Only or unformatted text.
    • Reapply formatting as needed.
  4. If preserving most formatting matters, try inserting the file into a new document:
    • Open a blank document.
    • Go to Insert > Object > Text from File.
    • Select the affected document and insert it.
    • This can recover the text while leaving behind a damaged final paragraph mark.
  5. Test whether the issue is only in that document:
    • Create a new Word file and type a few words.
    • Switch between views.
    • If the new file works normally, the problem is in those two documents, not Word itself.
  6. If document repair is needed, repair Office:
    • Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps
    • Select Microsoft 365 > Advanced options
    • Run Quick Repair first
    • If needed, run Online Repair
  7. Make sure Office and Windows are fully updated, since updates can fix Word display and printing issues.

If the content appears correctly in other views but not in Print Layout, the most likely cause is a corrupted section break or other damaged page layout element in those specific files.

For a document that only displays in Draft view, copy the content, minus the final paragraph mark of the doc, into a new, blank document. Does that fix the problems?

To show/hide paragraph marks (¶), as well as other nonprinting characters, you can click the ¶ icon on the Home tab.

Your document appears to contain section breaks. This means that you may have to copy section by section, omitting the section break in each step, and also omitting the final paragraph mark as I already mentioned.
