I want to move my complete drive and programs, and Win 10 to my faster laptop.

My 10 year old computer is too slow.

The drive boots in the laptop.

How do I re-register win 10?

Activation depends on the type of Windows licence(s) you have.

    1

Was Windows pre-installed on the laptop or did you purchase a full retail Windows licence for the laptop, or is that a free upgrade from Windows 7 or 8?

    2

On the PC you have moved the drive to, was there any Windows licence on that PC and if so, what type of licence.

Moving the old Windows 10 installation to a different laptop counts as a significant hardware change. Windows 10 ties activation to the device hardware, especially the motherboard, so booting the old drive in the faster laptop does not automatically carry activation with it.

What can be done depends on how Windows 10 was activated on the old device:

    1. If there is a digital license linked to a Microsoft account
      • On the faster laptop, connect to the internet.
      • Sign in as an administrator.
      • Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Troubleshoot.
      • Select I changed hardware on this device recently.
      • Sign in with the same Microsoft account that was linked to the Windows 10 digital license.
      • In the device list, select This is the device I’m using right now.
      • Select Activate.
This works only if the Microsoft account was linked to the digital license before the hardware change.
    2. If Windows 10 was activated with a product key
      • Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Change product key.
      • Enter the product key that was previously used for that Windows 10 installation.
    3. If Windows was preinstalled on the old laptop and the motherboard changed to a different laptop
      • A preinstalled Windows license is associated with that original hardware.
      • If Windows was preinstalled on the old PC, a new license is required after replacing the motherboard or moving to different hardware.
      • In that case, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation and select Go to Microsoft Store to purchase a new license.

    Important checks before trying activation:

    • Make sure the Windows edition is the same on both devices, such as Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro to Windows 10 Pro. The digital license or product key reactivates only if the edition remains the same.
    • The device must be online for activation.

If the goal is to keep all programs and files exactly as they are, Windows may still boot, but activation is based on the new laptop’s hardware, not the old drive itself.
