Microsoft OneDrive (or Office/Word connected to Microsoft 365) cannot connect to cloud servers. This happens when network interruptions, disabled TLS security protocols, or active proxy/firewall interference according to copilot. How do I fox this? hlp plse.

Hello @Kobi

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

Thank you for your patience, and taking the time to elaborate on your concerns.

This error indicates a connectivity problem that may prevent OneDrive from signing in or connecting to Microsoft cloud services.

Resolution steps:

  1. Check internet connectivity: Confirm that the device can access the internet.

Verify sign-in: Ensure the correct Microsoft 365 account is being used and complete any authentication prompts.

Check network settings: Verify proxy, firewall, and network policies are not blocking Microsoft services.

Check service status: Confirm Microsoft 365 services are operating normally.

Restart OneDrive: Close and reopen the OneDrive application.

  1. Reset OneDrive: If the issue persists, run %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe /reset from the Windows Run dialog, then reopen OneDrive.

Expected outcome: OneDrive connects successfully, authentication completes, and file synchronization resumes.

For error 0x8004de40, use this order:

    1. Confirm internet connectivity
      • Open a browser and verify general internet access.
      • If Wi-Fi is unstable, fix that first.
    2. Check TLS settings in Windows
      • Press Windows + R.
      • Type inetcpl.cpl and press Enter.
      • Open the Advanced tab.
      • Make sure TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 are enabled.
      • Select Apply > OK.
    3. On Windows 10, verify TLS cipher suites Microsoft 365 sign-in can fail if the cipher suite order does not match Azure Front Door requirements. Supported TLS 1.2 cipher suites are:
      • TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384
      • TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_128_GCM_SHA256
      • TLS_DHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384
      • TLS_DHE_RSA_WITH_AES_128_GCM_SHA256
These four suites should be at the top of the list. A PowerShell example from the documentation:
         Enable-TlsCipherSuite -Name "TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384" -Position 0

      Then verify the order with:
         Get-TlsCipherSuite

Note: changing cipher suite order affects system TLS behavior. If Group Policy manages SSL Cipher Suite Order, local changes may not persist.
    4. Check for proxy authentication If the sign-in message says proxy settings require authentication, OneDrive does not support authenticated proxies.
    5. If a firewall or proxy is in use Configure exceptions for Microsoft 365 destinations. The documented example includes allowing outbound access to:
      • *.microsoftonline.com
      • *.microsoftonline-p.com
      • *.sharepoint.com
      • *.outlook.com
      • *.lync.com
      • osub.microsoft.com
      • Ports 80/443
      • Protocols TCP and HTTPS
    6. Restart and re-register the work device connection If the device is joined to Microsoft Entra ID and the issue continues:
      • Restart the device while connected to the organization network.
      • If needed, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
         dsregcmd /leave
         dsregcmd /join

      • Restart again, then try OneDrive sign-in.
Note: only do the leave/join steps while connected to the organization infrastructure.
    7. For older Windows versions
      • On Windows 8, install KB 3140245 and create the corresponding registry value.
      • On Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, the Easy Fix Tool can add TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 secure protocol registry keys automatically.
      • On Windows Server 2012, if intermittent connectivity continues after the Easy Fix Tool, consider disabling DHE cipher suites.
    8. Run Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant The documented sign-in troubleshooting flow recommends using the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant to diagnose and automatically fix several common Office sign-in issues.
