Dialog box to change my Windows login PIN disappears after about 10 seconds

I'm trying to change my PIN via Windows settings "I forgot my PIN".

When the system asks me to log in, the dialog box does not give me enough time to authenticate and the window disappears.

Please advise.

    Hi,

I will walk through a few steps with you. Some of these are just to help figure out what is wrong, not to fix it right away. So if nothing changes after a step, that is normal. I will keep going until we solve it.

This is Credential UI Broker crashing it seems.

Did it started recently after an update?

Try a clean boot and let me know.

Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.

Type “msconfig” (without quotes) and press Enter.

In the System Configuration window, select the Services tab.

Check the box next to “Hide all Microsoft services”. Ensure you do it carefully, and not disable all Microsoft services.

    Click on “Disable all”.

Select the Startup tab and click on “Open Task Manager”.

In the Task Manager window, select each startup item and click on “Disable”.

Close Task Manager and click on OK in the System Configuration window.

    Restart your computer.

Hope that helps, and please contact us with any further questions. All the best.

A practical workaround is to reset the PIN from the Windows sign-in screen instead of from Settings.

    1. Sign out or lock the PC to return to the sign-in screen.
    2. Under the PIN box, select Sign-in options and make sure the PIN sign-in method is selected.
    3. Select I forgot my PIN.
    4. Complete the verification steps and create a new PIN.

If I forgot my PIN is not available on the sign-in screen:

    1. Select Sign-in options.
    2. Choose Enter your password and sign in with the account password.
    3. After signing in, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
    4. Select PIN (Windows Hello) > I forgot my PIN and reset it there.

If the PIN reset is for a work or school-managed Windows Hello for Business device, PIN reset can also be started from the lock screen, and the reset flow requires authentication. For Microsoft Entra hybrid joined devices, corporate network connectivity to domain controllers is required to complete a destructive PIN reset.

If the Settings-based dialog keeps disappearing, using the sign-in screen path is the supported end-to-end alternative.
