Press and release both Windows logo keys several times, because Windows locks the computer with Windows key + L; if pressing L alone locks it, Windows is probably receiving the Windows key as held down.^1^

1. Check whether Windows sees the Windows key as pressed

  1. Open Start → Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard.
  2. Turn on On-screen keyboard. Alternatively, press Windows + Ctrl + O.^2^
  3. Without touching the physical keyboard, check whether either Windows key appears highlighted.
  4. If highlighted, press and release each physical Windows key. Also inspect around those keys for dirt or anything holding one down.
  5. Test typing L again.

If an external keyboard is connected, disconnect it while testing. If this is a desktop, reconnect the keyboard directly to another USB port rather than through a hub. Microsoft also recommends checking for damaged cables, low batteries, and debris around keys.^3^

2. Turn off an accidentally latched modifier

In Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard:

  • Turn Sticky Keys off.
  • Open its settings and turn off Keyboard shortcut for Sticky Keys if it keeps being activated accidentally.
  • If keystrokes repeat, enable Filter Keys and configure it to ignore unintended or repeated keystrokes.

Sticky Keys changes how multi-key commands are entered, while Filter Keys can ignore brief or repeated input.^2^ Windows also provides separate options for locking shortcut keys and ignoring repeated keystrokes.^4^

3. Isolate a keyboard or driver fault

If the on-screen Windows key remains highlighted or the problem returns:

  1. Test with another keyboard.
  2. For a laptop, note that a faulty built-in keyboard can continue sending input even when an external keyboard is attached.^5^
  3. Search for Device Manager.
  4. Expand Keyboards, open the keyboard device, select Driver → Update Driver, and follow the prompts.
  5. Also open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates, because keyboard-driver updates may be delivered there.^3^

If only the laptop’s built-in keyboard causes the behavior after these checks, arrange keyboard service or replacement. Disabling or remapping L is not the preferred fix because it would prevent normal typing without correcting the unwanted Windows-key input.

In Windows, the keyboard shortcut to lock the PC is the Windows Key + L.

Check the Windows key on your keyboard to ensure it is not stuck down, also, if you press the Windows key on its own, does that open the Start Menu?

    2

Open Command Prompt, then paste in this command and press Enter:

    msdt.exe -id KeyboardDiagnostic

Run that Keyboard Troubleshooter to see if that can solve the problem.

    3

If that does not resolve this for you

    Open Device Manager

    Expand the Keyboards section

Right click your keyboard and choose 'Uninstall'

    Then restart your PC
