Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
Use the Microsoft account Sign-in Helper first. It asks for the account email address or phone number and either shows self-help steps or offers the chance to talk to an agent.
If access is still possible, follow this recovery sequence:
- Scan the PC for malware before changing the password: open Virus and threat protection → Scan options → Full scan → Scan now.
- Change or reset the password after the scan.
- Review account settings that may have been changed, especially connected accounts, forwarding, and automatic replies.
- Check recent sign-in activity on the Recent activity page and review any unfamiliar sign-ins from the last 30 days.
If the normal reset path does not work, use the Microsoft account recovery form. To improve the chance of success:
- Provide a working email address that can receive Microsoft’s response.
- Enter as much account history as possible.
- For Outlook.com or Hotmail.com accounts, exact email subject lines and contact details can help.
- Microsoft reviews recovery form answers and responds within 24 hours.
Important limits from Microsoft support:
- If two-step verification was turned on and none of the alternate verification methods are available, support agents cannot reset the account or change account details.
- Support agents are not allowed to send password reset links or directly access and change account details.
If the account is locked, sign in at https://account.microsoft.com. If the “Let’s prove you’re human” option does not appear, use the aka.ms/ link shown in the lock message and submit the reinstatement form. Do not submit multiple requests, because that can slow the response.
