We keep getting notifications about upgrading our Microsoft Azure, however, we don't use this anymore, and I can't see anywhere in our account that would let me upgrade, or remove.

Migrate your general-purpose v1 (GPv1) storage account to a general-purpose v2 (GPv2) storage account by 13 October 2026

You're receiving this notification because you're associated with one or more Azure subscriptions that have a GPv1 storage account. For reference, you can find this health advisory notification in the Azure portal using tracking ID: XTKT-BW8.

On 13 October 2026, we'll retire GPv1 storage accounts. To avoid disruptions, migrate your GPv1 storage accounts to GPv2 accounts before that date. GPv2 accounts give you access to the latest Azure Storage features while providing improved performance and true zonal redundancy support.

To avoid service disruptions, migrate your GPv1 storage accounts to GPv2 by 13 October 2026. To view your impacted resources in the Azure portal, go to the Storage Centre and look for Kind: Storage. For additional ways to access impacted resource information, see this documentation.

Watch the recorded video and demo here. Frequently asked questions are available in the documentation.

For Azure Databricks managed storage accounts: If your workspace relies on a GPv1 storage account, you won't be able to migrate that account manually. As part of this retirement, Microsoft will schedule and complete a managed migration of affected accounts to GPv2 on your behalf; no action is required.

Azure Databricks accounts will not be part of this migration and will be done separately. When Azure Databricks account migration is planned, notifications will be sent as appropriate.

Any non-Azure Databricks accounts that use GPv1 will require manual migration.

Automatic migration warning

After 13 October 2026, all existing GPv1 storage accounts will be automatically migrated over to a GPv2 account, which may result in higher billing costs. Your decision not to migrate an existing GPv1 storage account will be construed as consent for Microsoft to migrate the account on your behalf.  Please note that GPv1 accounts are expected to be billed at GPv2 rates shortly after the retirement date, even if the backend migration occurs later.

Cancel the Azure subscription that contains the GPv1 storage account; upgrading it is unnecessary if you no longer need any resources or data in that subscription.

    1. Find the affected subscription

The retirement email means your identity is associated with at least one subscription containing a GPv1 storage account, but the subscription might be hidden by a directory or portal filter.

    1. Sign in to the Azure portal using the account that received the notification.
    2. Open Subscriptions.
    3. Select the subscription filter at the upper left, select portal setting, and choose Select all.
    4. If it still does not appear, open Directories + subscriptions, switch to each available directory, and check Subscriptions again. Subscriptions are displayed only for the directory currently selected.^1^
    5. Within each subscription, open Resources or Storage accounts and look for the storage account whose Account kind is Storage—the legacy GPv1 kind.

    2. Cancel the subscription

Warning: Cancellation disables all services in the subscription. Back up anything that must be retained before proceeding.

    1. In the Azure portal, open Cost Management + Billing.
    2. Select Subscriptions or Azure subscriptions.
    3. Select the affected subscription.
    4. Select Cancel at the top.
    5. Select Cancel subscription, provide the reason, and:
      • Select Turn off resources when prompted.
      • Turn off support-plan auto-renewal if the plan is not used by another subscription.
    6. Select Cancel subscription to confirm.

Billing stops immediately after cancellation, although a final invoice can still include usage incurred before cancellation. Manually cancel any Marketplace SaaS subscriptions first; only pay-as-you-go SaaS subscriptions are canceled automatically with the Azure subscription.^2^

You must have the Subscription Owner role to cancel or later delete the subscription. If Cancel is missing, contact the subscription owner rather than upgrading the storage account.

    3. Delete the subscription after cancellation

Cancellation stops service and billing; deletion removes the subscription record when it becomes eligible.

    1. Return to Subscriptions after the required waiting period.
    2. Select the canceled subscription.
    3. Select Delete.
    4. Enter the subscription name and confirm.

The Delete option generally becomes available after three days for customer-led subscriptions or seven days for field and partner-channel subscriptions. Azure also automatically deletes a canceled subscription after 90 days. If deletion reports active resources, select View resources, remove them, and allow approximately 10 minutes for status to update.^2^

If you want to remove only the GPv1 storage account

If other resources in the subscription must remain, delete only the obsolete storage account:

    1. Open Storage accounts.
    2. Select the GPv1 account.
    3. Back up any data that must be retained.
    4. Select Delete and confirm.

Deleting a storage account deletes all blobs, files, queues, tables, and other data in it; recovery is not guaranteed.^3^

Do not choose Settings → Configuration → Account kind → Upgrade unless you intend to keep the storage account. Upgrading changes GPv1 to GPv2 and cannot be reversed.^4^

If the subscription or cancellation control remains unavailable

Create an Azure support request from the portal using ? → Help + support → Create a support request, and choose a billing/subscription-management issue. Include the retirement tracking ID and the subscription ID if known. Cancellation or ownership changes require the account billing administrator; creating a request normally requires Owner, Contributor, Support Request Contributor, or equivalent permissions.^5^

Deleting the Azure subscription is separate from deleting the organization’s Microsoft Entra tenant or the underlying Microsoft account. Delete the tenant only if it is also unused by Azure, Microsoft 365, applications, or other users; tenant deletion requires a Global Administrator and all prerequisite checks to pass.^6^
