Check your exact macOS version and Office product first, because an older installer works only for certain licensed products and macOS versions—not simply according to the MacBook’s age.
1. Identify what you have
- Select Apple menu → About This Mac and note the macOS name and version, such as:
- macOS 11 Big Sur
- macOS 12 Monterey
- macOS 13 Ventura
- macOS 14 Sonoma
- Confirm whether “Office 20014” means:
- Office 2024
- Office 2021/2019
- A Microsoft 365 subscription
If Office is already installed, open Word and select Word → About Word to identify the product.
2. Choose the applicable option
macOS 12 Monterey with Microsoft 365 or a compatible perpetual license
The last Office build documented for Monterey is 16.88. It can continue working, but receives no further security or feature updates.^1^
- Quit every Office application.
- If a newer incompatible installation is present, remove the Office applications from Finder → Applications.
- Open Microsoft’s Update history for Office for Mac page and check whether the full Office suite installer for version 16.88 is still listed—not an “update package.”^2^
- Install the downloaded
.pkg.
- Open Word and sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the Microsoft 365 subscription or Office license.
Microsoft only provides download links for recent releases on that page, so version 16.88 may no longer be available. Do not download an unofficial installer; contact Microsoft Support to ask whether an appropriate Microsoft-hosted package remains available, although archived installers are not guaranteed.
macOS 13 Ventura with Microsoft 365 or a compatible perpetual license
The last Office build documented for Ventura is 16.101.^1^
Use the same procedure above, checking the update-history page for the full 16.101 Office suite installer. This older build no longer receives updates on Ventura.
This route does not make a new Office 2024 installation compatible with Ventura: new installations of Office 2024 for Mac require macOS Sonoma or later.^1^
macOS 11 Big Sur or earlier
Installing an older build is no longer an effective workaround for affected Microsoft 365, Office 2021, or Office 2019 activation. Since July 13, 2026, Macs that cannot run at least macOS 12 cannot install the required licensing update; Office may open files but remain unable to edit, save, or create them.^3^
Available options are:
- Use Microsoft 365 for the web from the browser link provided in Microsoft’s update notice, then sign in with your Microsoft account.^3^
- Install Office on another supported Mac, PC, or mobile device.
- Upgrade macOS or replace the Mac if it cannot run macOS 12 or later.
Office 2011 is not an alternative for a Microsoft 365 subscription: Microsoft no longer makes Office for Mac 2011 available through the subscription portal.^4^
Activation also requires a valid Office license and periodic Internet access.^5^
