Can't open files on Chromebook - it just opens Onedrive again

I've tried to open various word documents from my Onedrive on my chromebook. It appears to open them for a second but then just opens onedrive again. I've never had a problem with opening files on my chromebook before, but now I just have multiple tabs of my onedrive instead of any of my files. I tried 'open in browser' and the same thing happened again.

Hello Jade Musto,

It sounds like the Chromebook is sending the file back to OneDrive instead of opening it in Word for the web. This might be caused by stored browser data, an extension, or the OneDrive Android app taking over Microsoft 365 links.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

  • Restart the Chromebook, update ChromeOS if an update is available, then open Microsoft 365 on the web directly. Sign in, select Word, and try opening the document from there.
  • Try the same steps in a Chrome Incognito window. If the document opens, clear the cookies and cached files for Microsoft 365 and OneDrive, then sign in again.
  • Temporarily disable ad blockers, privacy extensions, VPN extensions, or other browser add-ons.
  • If the OneDrive app was installed from Google Play, open the Chromebook’s Settings > Apps > Manage your apps > OneDrive > Opening supported links, and set links to open in Chrome. If that does not help, uninstall the OneDrive Android app and use OneDrive through the browser.

Please let me know how it goes after trying these steps, and I'll be glad to continue looking into it with you.
