Try this in order:
- In Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options:
- If Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello) is still shown, select Remove and then set it up again.
- When re-registering, make sure the reader is clean and dry, and capture different angles of the finger.
- If possible, add more than one fingerprint.
- Check the fingerprint driver:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Biometric devices.
- If the fingerprint device appears there, right-click it and reinstall the driver by selecting Uninstall device.
- Restart the laptop so Windows can reinstall the driver.
- If the device is missing or still not working, update the fingerprint driver from HP for the HP ZBook Studio G8.
- If Windows Hello says it cannot find a compatible fingerprint scanner:
- In Device Manager, confirm the sensor is listed under Biometric devices.
- If it is not listed, the driver may not be loaded correctly.
- If this started after moving to Windows 11 and the device uses an affected ELAN fingerprint driver, run a system file repair:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
sfc /scannow - This is a safe repair step that Microsoft documents for certain ELAN fingerprint driver issues after upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11.
- If the reader is an external or third-party device, check Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Additional settings:
- If Enhanced sign-in security is on, some external fingerprint readers will not work unless they support it.
- Turning Enhanced sign-in security off can allow non-ESS devices to work.
- Warning: disabling it removes existing Enhanced sign-in security enrollments and associated credentials such as passkeys. They can be set up again afterward.
- If biometric authentication still does not work:
- In Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, remove the nonworking fingerprint enrollment and re-enroll it.
- If needed, restart the biometric service by first removing the PIN in Sign-in options, then opening an elevated Command Prompt and running:
net stop wbiosrvc && net start wbiosrvc - Warning: removing the PIN changes sign-in configuration and requires setting it up again.
If the fingerprint hardware is not detected at all after the update, the most likely causes are a driver problem or the device no longer being exposed correctly under Biometric devices.
