A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
Try this in order:
- Open the shared link in an InPrivate/Incognito browser window.
- Sign in with the exact Microsoft account that received the sharing invitation.
- If the link still shows as signed out or fails to open, first sign in to
https://onedrive.comand then open the sharing link again. This is a documented workaround for shared file or folder sign-in problems. - In OneDrive on the web, check the Shared view instead of My Files. Files and folders shared by others appear under Shared. Shared items are not automatically stored in the recipient’s own OneDrive files area.
- If the recipient needs the shared folder to appear more like a normal folder experience, a shortcut can be added only if the recipient has edit permission to that folder.
- If the owner stopped sharing or the item was moved/removed, it will no longer appear in the recipient’s Shared view.
If the shared item opens as a webpage or behaves like a shortcut instead of a normal folder, that is a known OneDrive issue. In that case, the content can still be accessed through OneDrive.com.
If the problem is specifically that the recipient gets Access Denied or You need permission to access this resource when opening a shared folder, and this is a SharePoint/OneDrive site scenario, one documented cause is Limited-access user permission lockdown mode being enabled. The available workarounds are:
- Share individual files instead of folders.
- Share the whole site collection or subsite.
- If not required, disable Limited-access user permission lockdown mode.
If this is a personal Microsoft account scenario and sharing from Outlook.com/OneDrive is failing, Microsoft also recommends:
- Validate the Microsoft account at
https://account.live.com/reputationcheck - Make sure the Microsoft account profile is complete and Terms of Use are accepted if prompted.
- In Outlook.com People, edit any contact information for a contact and save it.
- Wait up to 24 hours for the change to take effect.
If none of the above works:
- For personal accounts, use Contact Microsoft Support from the support page.
- For work or school accounts, contact the organization’s IT helpdesk or admin.
