Azure Virtual Machine images that are pre-installed, configured, and tested with several commonly used tools for data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence training.
Simple way to think about the two: data drift is when the inputs change (the feature distributions move away from training), while concept drift is when the link between inputs and the right answer changes. You can see data drift straight away from production data. Concept drift only really shows up once you have labels, because the inputs can look normal while the model is getting answers wrong.
With late labels, a setup that works well in Azure Machine Learning model monitoring is:
- Turn on data drift (training data as the baseline) and prediction drift (validation data as the baseline). Neither needs ground truth, so they act as your early warning. Jensen-Shannon distance or PSI are good starting metrics.
- Add data quality (null rate, type errors, out-of-bounds) so broken pipelines don't look like drift.
- When labels arrive, join them to the logged predictions and enable the model performance signal (accuracy, precision, recall, or MAE/RMSE for regression). This is where concept drift gets confirmed.
- Route alerts through Event Grid and have them start a retraining pipeline. Use the drift alerts to flag a review, and let the performance alert trigger the actual retrain on fresh labeled data.
That way you don't retrain on every drift spike, only when the labels prove the model has slipped.
How long is the delay between a prediction and its label in your case: days or weeks?
