An organization that i work with sent an invite to "Guest User Access Teams team" as guest on MS teams for guest access and to share some files. However upon clicking the links to open my MS teams app or on web version it proceeds to asking me to login, go through scanning of QR for access and I always end up to a prompt saying your account is locked, contact support. this is just a family account and i've done all possible self help but to no avail cannot open anything. Pls help to unlock

Hello

Can you launch your web browser in InPrivate/ incognito mode first, then copy and paste the invitation link to the browser, and see if it works in incognito mode. If it still says lock, you need to let the person who invited you know. Only their organization admin can unlock your guest user in this case. It is NOT your personal account that's locked. It is your guest identify in that organization environment that's locked.

Kind of like you were invited to visit someone in their office building, but their lobby security blocks you.

I do want you to try in incognito mode, because other cached credentials could have confused this process and led to the lock.

For a personal Microsoft account used as a guest in another organization’s Teams, the lock must be cleared on the Microsoft account first.

  1. Try to unlock the Microsoft account by signing in at https://account.microsoft.com.
  2. If sign-in fails, use the Microsoft account sign-in helper: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2269719.
  3. If the sign-in flow does not show Let’s prove you’re human, the account was locked for suspicious activity or a Terms of Use violation. In that case, select the aka.ms/ link shown in the lock window and submit the account reinstatement form.
  4. After submitting the reinstatement form, wait for the Microsoft Online Safety support agent to contact by email. Do not submit multiple requests, because that can slow the response.
  5. If Teams keeps prompting for sign-in after the account is restored, sign out of all Teams sessions, close the app, then sign in again and complete any prompts.
  6. If access is still failing after the personal account is unlocked, ask the host organization to resend the guest invitation. Guest access in Teams is managed in the host organization, and the guest identity is separate from the home account.

Important details:

  • A Microsoft account and a work or school account are different account types, and guest access can depend on the host organization’s setup.
  • Support agents cannot directly change account details or send password reset links unless the proper account recovery or reinstatement process is completed.
  • If the host organization has blocked external access through tenant restrictions, only that organization’s administrator can unblock it.

Are you receiving a message similar to this?

If this is the case, then there is not much you can do on your side. You need to contact IT Admin of the organization you are trying to join and ask them to unlock your account and add this account as a guest in their organization.

    Hello,

Just a heads up since you are dealing with a locked account, this Microsoft Learn forum is just staffed by regular users, not Microsoft employees. We do not have backend access to customer databases to manually unlock your account.

To help figure out what is causing this, I need to know if your actual personal Microsoft account is completely locked down, or if the organization you are trying to join is just blocking your guest profile on their specific system.

If you open a fresh browser window and go to the regular account.microsoft.com website, does it let you sign into your personal account dashboard perfectly fine, or does it throw the exact same account locked error message there as well?

Let me know what it says.
