Restore Downloads to %USERPROFILE%\Downloads through its Location properties first, leaving the existing files in OneDrive until the local folder is working correctly.
Restore the default Downloads folder
- Open File Explorer.
- In the left navigation pane, right-click Downloads, then select Properties.
- Open the Location tab.
- Select Restore Default. The location should become:
C:\Users\<your-user-name>\Downloads
- Select Apply.
- If Windows asks whether to move the files from OneDrive to the new location, select No for now. This avoids moving cloud-only files before they have downloaded.
- Sign out and back in, or restart Windows.
This is the matching recovery procedure for a Downloads folder redirected into OneDrive.^1^
Copy your existing downloads back safely
After the local Downloads folder reappears:
- Open the old Downloads location inside OneDrive.
- For any cloud-only files, right-click the folder and select Always keep on this device.
- Wait until the files show a solid green check mark.
- Copy, rather than move, the files into the restored local Downloads folder.
- Open several copied files to verify them before deleting anything from OneDrive.
Files On-Demand can leave placeholders on the computer instead of complete local files, so waiting for the download to finish prevents data loss.^2^
If Downloads or the Location tab is missing
First create the physical folder:
- Press Windows+R.
- Enter:
%USERPROFILE%
- If no Downloads folder exists there, create a new folder named exactly
Downloads.
Then repair Windows’ known-folder registration. Registry changes can cause serious problems if entered incorrectly, so back up the registry before proceeding.
- Press Windows+R, enter
regedit.exe, and approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
- Find this value:
{374DE290-123F-4565-9164-39C4925E467B}
- Set its data to:
%USERPROFILE%\Downloads
- The value type should be REG_EXPAND_SZ. If it is missing, create a new Expandable String Value using the identifier above as its name.
- Restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager, sign out and back in, or restart the computer.
Microsoft documents that identifier and default path specifically for the Downloads known folder.^3^
OneDrive backup setting
OneDrive’s documented Windows Known Folder Move covers Desktop, Documents, and Pictures, not Downloads.^4^ Therefore, if OneDrive Settings → Sync and backup → Manage backup does not show Downloads, that is expected; restore Downloads through its Windows Location setting rather than unlinking OneDrive.
Unlinking OneDrive is unnecessary for this repair and would affect synchronization more broadly.
