Moving From one Family Subscription to Another Family Subscription

My wife and I had separate 365 Subscriptions prior to getting married. Since we are now married, we want to move her files and information to my account. How can we do that without losing all of the files backed up on her One Drive?

Thanks

    Hi, @Gerald Davenport

Your wife does not need to move her OneDrive files to your Microsoft account.

Microsoft accounts cannot be merged. The best option is for her to keep using her current Microsoft account and join your Microsoft 365 Family subscription using that same account.

Her OneDrive files will stay in her account.

    Before her current subscription expires:

    • Invite her from your Microsoft 365 Family subscription.
    • Have her accept the invitation using the account where her OneDrive files are stored.
    • Once sharing is active, she can cancel or turn off recurring billing for her separate subscription.

    Thanks!

Microsoft does not support merging two Microsoft accounts or transferring an existing Microsoft 365 subscription from one Microsoft account to another.

To keep her OneDrive files safe, use this approach:

    1. Keep the Microsoft account that has the files. Her OneDrive files stay tied to her existing Microsoft account. They are not deleted just because the subscription changes.
    2. Turn off recurring billing on the subscription that will be discontinued. Let that subscription run until its paid end date so no benefits are lost early.
    3. After her standalone subscription expires, add her to the Microsoft 365 Family subscription that will be kept. Only the subscription holder can share the subscription, and shared subscriptions can only be shared with members of the family group.
    4. Have her accept the Family sharing invitation using the same Microsoft account she already uses for OneDrive. This keeps her files and personal data with that account.
    5. If OneDrive storage does not update right away after accepting, verify the invitation was accepted, then wait up to 2 hours and go to Manage storage and Refresh.

    Important details:

    • Her personal files, emails, appointments, contacts, photos, and notebooks remain private and are not automatically shared with the subscription holder.
    • If the goal is to truly move all files into a single account, that is a manual data move. Download or sync the files from her OneDrive, then upload them to the OneDrive of the account that will be kept. This is separate from subscription sharing.
    • If she is removed from her old subscription or it expires, her files remain intact, but subscription benefits expire.

If the goal is only to stop paying for two subscriptions, the simplest path is: let one subscription expire, then share the remaining Family subscription with her existing Microsoft account. If the goal is one single account holding all files, manually copy the OneDrive data from her account to the other account before closing anything.
