Please let me know if and how you resolve this as I am in the exact same situation. I have just upgraded my CPU and GPU and now my windows is inactivated. More annoyingly I just go round and round in circles when trying to find support with no live agent to be found anywhere, just AI bots or redirects to generic websites with 'useful' links which are not useful. More proof that Microsoft are one of the worst companies out there and prioritise profit over customer support. I'm quite frankly disgusted by this situation as by simply by upgrading hardware, I seem to have invalidated my licence, and there is no way to resolve this... And they wonder why piracy is on the rise.
Windows 11 deactivated after a CPU upgrade, and Microsoft’s "tech support" AI support tells me to buy another license
I’m honestly furious about this.
I had a Windows 8 license years ago, upgraded to Windows 10 and then Windows 11 Pro, and stayed activated throughout. The digital license was linked to my Microsoft account.
Recently, I replaced only the CPU. Same motherboard, same Windows installation, same account. Windows immediately lost activation with error 0xC004F211.
I’ve tried all the standard routes:
- Activation Troubleshooter → “I changed hardware recently”: no eligible devices found.
- Original Windows 8 key: rejected.
- Microsoft’s Activation Portal, using the Installation ID from
slmgr /dti: “Unable to verify your installation ID.”
Making this worse, Microsoft’s support chatbot feels like a stupid AI model that keeps gaslighting me - citing forum replies as official policy and telling me to buy another license instead of investigating. The worst part is that reaching an actual human in support seems impossible...
I understand that new free upgrades using Windows 7/8 keys ended. But this is an existing Windows 11 digital license on the same PC after a CPU replacement. If that invalidates my license, show me the actual Microsoft policy or license clause.
Has anyone with a Windows 8 → 10 → 11 license successfully restored activation after a recent hardware change? What worked, and how did you reach a human who could actually help?
Please don’t suggest the troubleshooter again or buying another key. I want my existing license investigated, not another sales pitch.

Microsoft closed the loophole in 2023 allowing users to continue to use upgraded licence based on Windows 7/8.

I understand why you want this investigated rather than another sales pitch: 0xC004F211 means Windows detected a hardware change, not that a CPU replacement automatically cancels your license. There is no official clause stating that a CPU-only upgrade revokes an existing digital license; the upgrade-ending notice addresses obtaining new free upgrades.
Since you’ve already exhausted the activation tools, here are some suggestions you can try:
Reach out again to Microsoft Support, when you see "Ask our Support Assistant" box, use prompts such as "I would like to speak directly to a support agent" or "I would like to request for a live chat support session." This will help direct you to live support.
Ask the agent to review your existing digital entitlement, emphasizing the unchanged motherboard. Provide your original purchase evidence privately, screenshots of both failures, and request a case number. If reactivation is refused, ask for the specific license clause and written reason, rather than a forum link.
