No longer able to limit search to inbox in mobile app for Android

Previously I could enter a search term, then limit the search to "mail" by clicking a button at the top. Then a filter icon would appear at the top that would allow me to limit the search to my inbox (or another folder of my choosing). That filter icon stopped appearing for me within the past week or 2. How can I limit searches to my inbox now?

Outlook for Android currently has no documented control or setting to restrict a search to Inbox, so use Outlook on the web or desktop when a strict folder-only search is required.

This appears to be a recent, undocumented Android UI change rather than a formally announced permanent removal. Microsoft’s current Android instructions describe:

    • Search for email contents.
    • Filters for Unread, Flagged, or Attachments.

They do not describe an Inbox/current-folder search scope or a way to restore the former filter icon.^1^ When online, Outlook Mobile searches the mailbox broadly, excluding Draft, Deleted, and Spam folders.^2^

    Practical workarounds

    1. For a business account, use Outlook on the web
      • Open https://outlook.office.com.
      • Select Inbox, then enter the search term.
      • Open the search filter or scope menu and select Inbox, Current folder, or the equivalent specific-folder scope if your tenant’s interface provides it. Labels can vary by interface version.
    2. Use Outlook desktop
      • Select Inbox.
      • Select the search box and enter the search term.
      • Change the search scope to Current Folder. Outlook desktop officially supports scopes including Current Mailbox, Current Folder, and Subfolder.^3^
    3. Try including the folder name in the Android query
      • A query such as folder:Inbox search-term may work for some account types, but this syntax is not documented as a generally supported Outlook-for-Android replacement. Treat it only as a possible workaround.

Report or verify the Android change

To determine whether Microsoft treats this as an app issue, controlled rollout, or design change:

    1. In Outlook for Android, tap the profile photo.
    2. Tap the ? icon.
    3. Select Contact Outlook Mobile Support.

This opens an in-app support conversation and sends the case to the Outlook Mobile support channel.^4^

Also submit feedback through Home/side menu → Help & Feedback → Send Feedback, including a screenshot and the Outlook app version.^5^

    Dear @Jamie

Thank you for reaching out. I understand how inconvenient this is, especially since you were previously able to filter search results by folder in Outlook for Android.

Since the filter icon disappeared only recently, this may be related to an app update or a change in the search interface. However, I could not confirm that Microsoft has officially removed this feature.

    I recommend trying the following:

    1. Update Outlook: Open the Google Play Store and check whether an update is available for Microsoft Outlook.
    2. Check the search interface: Open Outlook, tap Search, enter a keyword, and select Mail. Check whether the filter option appears in the search results.
    3. Select your email account: If you have multiple accounts, select the specific account before searching. This will narrow the results to that account, although it will not necessarily limit them to the Inbox.
    4. Try Outlook on the web: As a temporary workaround, sign in to https://outlook.office.com and use the search scope options to search within your Inbox, if available for your account.

Microsoft’s guidance for Outlook mobile search is available here: Search made simple in Outlook mobile

To help me narrow this down, could you please confirm:

    • Which version of Outlook for Android are you currently using? You can find this under Outlook > Settings > Help & feedback.
    • Does the filter icon disappear only after selecting Mail, or is it missing throughout the search interface?

If possible, please share a screenshot of the current search results screen, with personal information hidden.

If the option remains unavailable, I also recommend reporting it through Outlook > Settings > Help & feedback > Contact Support, so the Outlook mobile support team can confirm whether this is an intentional interface change or an issue with the current app version.

I hope this helps, and I look forward to your update.
