I just paid for a new annual subscription on September 1, 2026 and today, October 11, 2026, it is telling me I need to renew. Is this a glitch or just another way to squeeze money from me?

    1

    Open Word.

At the top right of Word, log out of Office.

Restart (not shut down) your PC, then log back into Office, is your subscription then recognized correctly.

    2

If not, log into your Microsoft account on this link, check the expiry date listed on your subscription, is that listed correctly.

If not, go to the Billing section, is it indicated your payment has been processed correctly.

This can happen for a few supported reasons, and it is not resolved by paying alone in every case.

    1. Check whether the subscription is actually active.
      • Sign in to Services & subscriptions at https://account.microsoft.com/services.
      • Review the Microsoft 365 entry.
      • If it shows Expires on [date], the renewal did not complete.
      • If it shows Has recurring billing or a valid renewal date, the subscription is active.
    2. If the renewal was bought from a retail store, the product key may still need to be redeemed.
      • A charge can appear before the subscription is activated.
      • Complete the renewal at https://office.com/setup, or follow the link in the email receipt.
    3. If Office shows a renewal banner even though the subscription is active, close all Office apps after renewal and reopen them.
      • Microsoft states that after renewing, closing all Office applications removes the renewal message.
    4. If the warning says “ACCOUNT NOTICE. We've run into a problem with your Microsoft 365 subscription”, check the payment method.
      • Go to Payment options at https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments.
      • If the payment method shows an error, update it.
      • This notice is often caused by a declined or expired card, which can leave the subscription expired or suspended.
    5. If the subscription status online looks wrong after payment, contact Microsoft Support.
      • Microsoft specifically recommends checking the renewal status online first, then contacting support if the expiration date does not look right.

If access is needed immediately, Microsoft notes that Office on the web can still be used at https://www.office.com/ while the subscription issue is being resolved.
