How fix accidental merging between the downloads folder and desktop screen

Hello,

My downloads folder and my desktop have accidentally become merged together. Every single file in my downloads is covering my desktop wallpaper screen. If i try to delete an icon off my desktop wallpaper, it deletes the actual file from my downloads folder and straight to the recycle bin.

How can I separate these two so they are independent again?

Thank you.

Please provide some more information, so I can provide you with the best solution.

Click your Start Button, type regedit and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor.

Click View and make sure 'Address Bar' is turned on.

Paste this into the Address Bar at the top and hit Enter.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

Please provide a screenshot of that Registry Editor page.

This usually happens because the Desktop folder location is pointing to the wrong place, or the Desktop and Downloads folder metadata became mixed up.

    Try these fixes in order:

    1. Check whether desktop icons are just being shown normally
      • Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
      • Select View.
      • Make sure Show desktop icons is checked.
    2. Check the Desktop folder location
      • Open File Explorer.
      • Find the Desktop folder.
      • Right-click Desktop > Properties.
      • Open the Location tab.
      • If the Desktop path is not the normal desktop folder, select Move and choose the folder that contains the desktop items that should appear there, then select Apply.
      • If prompted to move files from the old location to the new one, select Yes.
    3. If Downloads was renamed or is showing as Desktop, rename it back
      • In File Explorer, if the folder that is really pointing to the Downloads path is showing with the wrong name, right-click it and use Rename to change it back to Downloads.
    4. If the Location tab cannot restore it, reset the Desktop folder path in the registry
      • Warning: modifying the registry incorrectly can cause serious problems. Back up the registry first.
      • Right-click the Windows logo and select Run.
      • Type regedit.exe and press Enter.
      • Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
      • Find the Desktop entry.
      • Set it to: %USERPROFILE%\Desktop
      • Restart Explorer.exe, or sign out and sign back in, or restart the PC.
    5. If folder icons/names are still mixed up after the path is correct
      • Open an Administrator Command Prompt.
      • Run: del "%userprofile%\desktop.ini" /a
      • Sign out and sign back in.

If only the Recycle Bin or other system icons are missing afterward, restore them from Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings.
