My computer boots and goes to my designated desktop picture with all my icons. After a few minutes the screen goes black. However I still have my icons. I want the desktop picture to be the background. How can I make is permanent?

    Hi Edward Thompson,

Since your desktop icons remain visible when the background turns black, I’d suggest checking whether desktop background images are being disabled through Windows accessibility settings.

    1. Open Control Panel > Ease of Access > Ease of Access Center.
    2. Select Make the computer easier to see.
    3. Look for Remove background images (where available).
    4. If it is checked, clear the checkbox and select Apply > OK.
    5. Then restart the PC and check whether the wallpaper remains visible.

If that option is already unchecked, please let us know whether the background turns black after a consistent amount of time or after a particular action. That can help narrow down what is changing the background.

    Hi, let me help you.

Windows keeps a cached copy of the wallpaper at first, which is why it shows up at boot, but it still points to the original file path. When that file has been moved, deleted, or sits on a drive or cloud folder that isn’t ready yet, the background eventually falls back to black while the icons stay put. The fix is to put the picture in a stable folder like Pictures, then right-click the desktop, choose Personalize > Background, browse to that file, and set it again. Don’t move or rename it afterward.

Set Personalize your background to Picture, select the desired image, and then ensure that no contrast theme is overriding it with a black background.

    Set one permanent background picture

    1. Right-click an empty area of the desktop and select Personalize.
    2. Select Background.
    3. Under Personalize your background, choose Picture—not Slideshow or Windows spotlight.
    4. Select the picture under Recent images, or select Browse photos and choose the file.
    5. Optionally select Fill under Choose a fit for your desktop image.

The Picture setting uses one image, while Slideshow and Windows spotlight change images automatically. You can also right-click the image file and select Set as desktop background.^1^

    Stop the black-background override

Because the icons remain visible, this is a desktop-background problem rather than the whole display turning off. Check the Windows contrast setting:

    1. Press Windows key + I.
    2. Go to Accessibility > Contrast themes.
    3. Set Contrast themes to None.
    4. Select Apply.^2^

    Next, refresh the desktop:

    1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    2. Find Windows Explorer under Processes.
    3. Right-click it and select Restart.

The taskbar and desktop may disappear briefly and then reload.^3^

If the picture still changes after a few minutes

    • Reset the active theme: Open Settings > Personalization > Themes, select a default Windows theme, and then return to Background and choose the picture again. Windows themes include background settings and can be saved after customization.^4^
    • Check for wallpaper software: Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. If Bing Wallpaper or another wallpaper-changing application is installed, disable or uninstall it before setting the picture again.^5^
    • Install current Windows updates: Go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install everything available, and restart. This is especially important if the problem began after the August 27, 2026 update: Microsoft documented an issue that caused some desktop backgrounds to become solid black and resolved it in updates released on or after September 8, 2026.^6^
