Azure MFA Lockout After Phone Replacement – No Alternative Verification Methods Available
I'm looking for guidance on regaining access to an active Azure subscription.
The subscription originally came from a Visual Studio benefit provided during my employment at Microsoft and was later converted to a paid personal subscription. The subscription and hosted applications are still active and running.
I still have access to:
- My Hotmail account
- Visual Studio Essential (reverted from the Visual Studio professional that was provided by Microsoft)
However, I cannot access the Azure portal. After entering my Hotmail account, I am redirected to Microsoft Entra authentication and the only available verification methods are:
- Approve a request on Microsoft Authenticator
- Use a verification code from Microsoft Authenticator
I recently replaced the phone that was originally registered with Microsoft Authenticator and no longer have access to that device. No other verification methods are available.
Because the subscription originated from a Microsoft employee benefit, I suspect the Azure subscription or identity may still be associated with a Microsoft Entra tenant that I no longer have access to following my departure from Microsoft.
Has anyone encountered a similar situation or knows the correct process for recovering access or resetting MFA in this scenario?I'm looking for guidance on regaining access to an active Azure subscription.
