To give the Surface Pro a clean start, back up anything needed first, then reset the device and remove it from the Microsoft account.
- Back up important data.
- If Outlook is used, back up Outlook data files before resetting.
- Reset the Surface and remove personal data.
- On Windows 11: Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC > Reset PC > Erase everything.
- On Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > under Reset this PC, select Get started > Erase everything.
- If planning to give the device to someone else, use the option that removes everything. On Surface, this reinstalls Windows and removes personal files, settings changes, apps, and drivers that were installed.
- For Windows 10, when prompted, choose to fully clean the drive to make it harder for other people to recover removed files. This can take 1–2 hours.
- Cloud download is recommended when offered, and the device should be connected to the internet.
- If Windows cannot start, use Microsoft Surface Data Eraser.
- This boots from a USB drive and securely wipes all data from a compatible Surface device.
- Warning: this deletes all data on the device, including the operating system, installed apps, files, and settings.
- The legacy Surface Data Eraser is not compatible with the latest Surface devices including Surface Pro 10 and Surface Pro 11th Edition. For those devices, use Surface Data Eraser (IT Toolkit).
- After the reset is complete, remove the device from the Microsoft account.
- Sign in at https://account.microsoft.com/devices.
- Find the device, select Show details > More actions > Remove.
- To stop it affecting the Microsoft Store device limit, select Unlink for that device.
This process removes personal content from the Surface while keeping the Microsoft account available for use on other devices.
