Before performing this process, please log into your Microsoft account on this link (https://account.microsoft.com/services/) and check to ensure your Office licence or Microsoft 365 subscription is listed correctly on your account.

Open the Settings App (gear icon on your Start Menu)

Go to Apps - Installed Apps, then scroll down to find Microsoft Office

Select that and choose Modify - Online Repair

That should fix any issues with your Office Installation.

If that does not resolve the problem, completely uninstall Office, restart your PC, then download and reinstall Office from your Microsoft account online (https://account.microsoft.com/services/).

This symptom matches a known Office issue where Word, Outlook, or OneNote can close when typing because of a version mismatch between Office 2016 proofing tools and Microsoft 365 language packs. It can also be caused by Office add-ins or a damaged Office installation.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Update Office
      • Open any Office app.
      • Go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
      • If Update Now is not shown, select Enable Updates first.
Microsoft fixed one typing-related crash in:
      • Beta Channel: Version 2409 (Build 18021.15000)
      • Current Channel Preview: Version 2409 (Build 18025.20000)
      • Current Channel: Version 2409 (Build 18025.20000)
    2. Run an Online Repair This is the recommended workaround for the typing crash issue.
      • Right-click Start.
      • Select Apps and Features.
      • Select Microsoft 365 or Office.
      • Select Modify.
      • Choose Online Repair > Repair.
Note: Online Repair is more thorough than Quick Repair.
    3. Check for add-ins by starting in Safe Mode If the apps stay open in Safe Mode, an add-in is likely causing the problem.
      • Press Windows + R.
      • Type:
        • winword /safe for Word
        • excel /safe is documented for Excel
        • powerpnt /safe for PowerPoint
      • If the app opens in Safe Mode, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
      • In Manage, select the add-in type and choose Go.
      • Clear one add-in at a time, then restart the app normally.
Older add-ins such as Abbyy FineReader, PowerWord, and Dragon Naturally Speaking are specifically called out as known problem add-ins.
    4. If Office 2016 proofing tools or old language packs are installed, remove them Office 2016 proofing tools used together with later Office versions are not supported and can cause this crash. The recommended setup is to uninstall the old Office 2016 proofing tools and use the matching Office language packs instead.
    5. If the problem continues, update Windows and device drivers If Office still crashes after repair and add-in checks, install Windows updates and make sure these drivers are current:
      • video card
      • printer
      • mouse
      • keyboard
    6. Last step: uninstall and reinstall Office If none of the above fixes it, uninstall and reinstall Office.
