Before performing this process, please log into your Microsoft account on this link (https://account.microsoft.com/services/) and check to ensure your Office licence or Microsoft 365 subscription is listed correctly on your account.

Open the Settings App (gear icon on your Start Menu)

Go to Apps, then scroll down to find Microsoft Office

Select that and choose Modify - Online Repair

That should fix any issues with your Office Installation.

If that process does not resolve the problem, the best option is to completely uninstall Office, restart (not shut down) your PC, then download and reinstall Office from your Microsoft account online (https://account.microsoft.com/services/).

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Update Office manually
      • Open any Office app if possible, then go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
      • If the issue is related to a known Office build problem, updating can fix it. A known issue where Word, Excel, and PowerPoint closed unexpectedly with cloud files was fixed in Version 2206 (Build 16.0.15330.20230) for Current Channel.
    2. Start the apps in Safe Mode to check add-ins
      • Open Run from Windows search.
      • Try these commands one at a time:
        • winword.exe /safe
        • excel.exe /safe
        • powerpnt.exe /safe
      • If an app opens in Safe Mode, an add-in is likely causing the crash. Disable add-ins and test again.
    3. Repair Microsoft 365 / Office
      • On Windows 11: go to Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
      • Select the Office app entry, then Advanced options > Repair.
      • If Repair does not help, use Reset if available.
      • Or use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, right-click Microsoft 365 or Office, then select Repair or Change.
    4. Install Windows updates and check device drivers
      • Run Windows Update and install available updates.
      • If the problem continues, update these drivers from the device manufacturer: video card, printer, mouse, and keyboard. On laptops, also check the laptop manufacturer site for updated drivers.
    5. Reinstall Office if repair does not fix it
      • Use the Microsoft uninstall troubleshooter to remove Office.
      • Restart the PC after uninstalling.
      • Then reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office.
    6. If files themselves are damaged
      • Open the app, then go to File > Open > Browse.
      • Select the file, click the arrow next to Open, then choose Open and Repair.

If the apps fail to start at all, the most useful next step is Repair from Settings or Control Panel, then Safe Mode, then reinstall if needed.
