Every time I edit documents on excel and click save, the screen goes dark and then the app crashes, with the document not saving.

If you use OneDrive to sync your files online, try saving the document to your Desktop or Documents folder to test if the file will save correctly.

    2

If that does not resolve the problem.

Open the Settings App (gear icon on your Start Menu)

Go to Apps - Installed Apps, then scroll down to find Microsoft Office

Select that and choose Modify - Online Repair

That should fix any issues with your Office Installation.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Save the workbook with a new name:
      • In Excel, go to File > Save As.
      • Save it with a unique file name.
      • If this works, the original file or save process for that file is likely being interrupted.
    2. Save to a different location:
      • Save the file to another local folder or another drive.
      • Excel saves by creating a temporary file in the destination folder, deleting the original file, and then renaming the temporary file. If that process is interrupted, the workbook may not save correctly.
    3. Check free disk space:
      • Make sure the destination drive has enough free space.
      • If the disk is full, Excel cannot complete the save.
    4. Check folder permissions:
      • The save location must allow Read, Write, Modify, and Delete permissions.
      • If saving to an external or network drive, a connection failure can also cause save errors.
    5. Test Excel in Safe Mode:
      • Exit Excel.
      • Open Excel while holding Ctrl until prompted.
      • Select Yes to start in Safe Mode.
      • Open a workbook and try saving again.
      • If saving works in Safe Mode, a third-party add-in or startup file is likely causing the crash. Remove the add-in or startup file causing the issue.
    6. Temporarily disable antivirus scanning:
      • Some antivirus software can interrupt Excel while it saves temporary files.
      • Temporarily deactivate antivirus software, then test saving again.
    7. Shorten the file path if needed:
      • If the full path and file name exceed 218 characters, Excel may show Filename is not valid.
      • Move the file to a shorter path such as Desktop and try again.
    8. If the workbook still will not save, use one of these recovery workarounds:
      • Move the worksheets to a new workbook:
        1. Press Shift+F11 to add a filler worksheet.
        2. Select the first real sheet, hold Shift, and select the last sheet.
        3. Right-click the grouped sheets and select Move or Copy.
        4. In To Book, select (New Book).
        5. Select OK and save the new workbook.
      • Or save as a different file type:
        • Go to File > Save As and choose another format such as .xlsx or .xlsm.

To reduce data loss going forward:

    • Store files in OneDrive or SharePoint and use AutoSave.
    • In Excel, go to File > Options > Save and make sure:
      • Save AutoRecover information every x minutes is enabled.
      • Keep the last autorecovered version if I close without saving is enabled.
