As an alternative to click and drag, Left click at the beginning of the text to be selected, then move the mouse to the end of the text and hold down the SHIFT key while Left clicking at that point.

Your problem with clicking and dragging may be caused by a defect in the mouse. Does it affect all applications?

As an alternative to click and drag, Left click at the beginning of the text to be selected, then move the mouse to the end of the text and hold down the SHIFT key while Left clicking at that point.

But that's not how it's supposed to work and that adds a large hassle for someone like me who needs to use the drag and slide method very frequently.

Did you try a different mouse, preferably a completely different model, from a different manufacturer, to rule out any issues with the mouse driver?
