    Hi Allen,

To help narrow down the cause, kindly provide a few more details:

    • Which version of Excel are you using (Microsoft 365 Apps, Office 2024, Office 2021, Office 2019, etc.)?
    • What exactly happens when you try to copy and paste?
    • When did the issue start?
    • Did the problem begin after a recent Office update?

In the meantime, there was a known issue reported in September 2026 where copy and paste operations in Excel could fail after certain Office security updates. Symptoms included copied cells remaining selected while paste would not work and no error message was displayed.

Microsoft has since released fixes through newer Office updates, so if your Excel version falls within the affected versions (Excel 2016, 2019, 2021, or 2024), you may want to review the following article and ensure the latest updates are installed: The paste operation might fail with no notifications in Excel.

According to the article, the issue has been fixed in newer builds, but the fix may not be applied automatically until the latest Office updates are installed.

If the issue persists after confirming Office is fully updated and the behavior does not match the known issue described above, you may also try starting Excel in Safe Mode, temporarily disabling add-ins, or testing copy and paste in a new blank workbook to help determine whether the problem is related to the Office installation, a specific workbook, or an add-in conflict.

Feel free to let me know if you need further assistance after applying the steps above.

    Try these fixes in order:

    1. Install the latest Office updates A known Excel issue can cause paste to fail silently, where the copied cells stay selected but nothing is pasted. This issue is fixed in the latest updates for supported versions of Excel. Install the latest Office updates, restart Excel, and test copy/paste again.
    2. Use Paste Special as a workaround If normal paste fails:
      • Go to Home > Paste dropdown > Paste Special
      • Try Formula, Formula and number formats, Values, Values and number formats, or Paste Link
    3. Check that the paste area matches the copied area If the destination range is not the same size and shape as the copied data, paste can fail.
      • Either select only the upper-left destination cell and paste
      • Or select a destination range with the exact same number of rows and columns as the copied data
    4. Make sure the destination has enough columns If pasting multiple columns of data, insert more columns first:
      • Select the column heading to the right of where the new column is needed
      • Go to Home > Insert
      • Repeat until enough columns exist
    5. Check cell formatting when pasting large amounts of data If pasting a large amount of information, make sure the destination column format matches the data:
      • Select the column heading
      • Go to Home > Number Format
      • Choose the format that matches the data being pasted
      • Paste one column at a time
    6. If Paste Special is missing or not working
      • Go to File > Options > Advanced
      • Under Cut, copy and paste, make sure Show Paste Options button when content is pasted is checked
      • Close all web browser instances and test again
      • Start Excel in Safe Mode by holding Ctrl while opening Excel, then click Yes
      • If Paste Special works in Safe Mode, disable add-ins one at a time until the conflicting add-in is found
    7. If formulas paste incorrectly After pasting a copied formula, verify the cell references. Relative, absolute, and mixed references can change when pasted. If needed, select the reference in the formula bar and press F4 to switch reference types.
    8. If only the result is needed, paste values instead of formulas
      • Copy the cells
      • Select the upper-left destination cell
      • Use Paste Values
