Hi Team,

We got a question regarding Azure Arc Hybrid Activation. If we install the Azure Arc agent on on-premises Windows Servers (2012, 2016, 2019, or 2022), will Microsoft provide support for operating system-related issues, or is the support limited only to Azure Arc services and the Azure Arc agent?

Technically, installing the Azure Arc agent on on-premises Windows Server will it shift or transfer support responsibility for the underlying Microsoft Windows operating system to Microsoft.

Additionally, if you could also confirm what would be cost for each server to enable the hybrid activation for on-prem servers through Azure Arc

Pay-as-you-go licensing through Arc won’t apply to any of the servers (2012, 2016, 2019, or 2022) you listed. Configure Windows Server Pay-as-you-go with Azure Arc says “Applies to: Windows Server 2025”, so there’s no per-server cost to quote for 2012, 2016, 2019 or 2022.

What Arc does give those versions is Extended Security Updates. If Windows Server 2012 is part of this, the window shuts on 13 October. From Prepare to deliver ESUs: “the October 13, 2026 security update is the final update provided through ESUs. At midnight Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) on October 14, 2026, Windows Server 2012 ESU licenses enabled by Azure Arc are deactivated and stop providing update eligibility.”

2016 runs the other way and is still ahead of you. End of support is 12 January 2027, ESUs continue through 2030, you can configure them in the portal now, and billing starts 13 January 2027. 2019 and 2022 are still in support, so ESUs don’t come into it at all.

On your main question, connecting a server to Arc doesn’t move OS support responsibility to Microsoft. Even for ESUs: they “don’t include new features, customer-requested nonsecurity hotfixes, or design change requests.” It only includes Critical and Important security patches, nothing more.
