My Microsoft Surface Pro 8 no longer holds a charge. It only turns on when plugged in, and when it turns on, it stays at 0%. I believe it may need a battery replacement. How can I submit a service request for a battery replacement?

If the Surface shows 0%, only runs while plugged in, and turns off when unplugged, a service request can be started from the Microsoft devices page.

    Steps:

    1. Go to account.microsoft.com/devices and sign in.
    2. If the Surface Pro 8 is not already registered, register it to the account first.
    3. Select the Surface Pro 8.
    4. Select Start order.
    5. Follow the prompts to create the service request.

If the battery icon shows a red X and the device turns off when unplugged, Microsoft directs starting a service request from Device service and repairs.

    Battery replacement options may include:

    • Authorized Service Provider support for in-person service, depending on country or region.
    • Battery replacement service through Microsoft, depending on device, warranty status, location, and coverage.
    • Self-repair with available replacement components and service guides, intended for technically skilled repair.

If the device is visibly swollen or the battery has expanded beyond the enclosure, stop using it and handle it carefully to avoid pressure or puncturing the battery.

Go to account.microsoft.com/devices, sign in with your Microsoft account, and choose the device that needs service, select Next, and then follow the instructions to complete your service request. If it isn't registered, select Register device and enter the serial number.

The portal will show whether the device is covered. If it's outside the Limited Warranty, your product may be repaired or replaced depending on the available out-of-warranty offers, which vary by product and country. For a Surface Pro 8 that often means a paid service fee, or a refurbished replacement unit. The cost page (support.microsoft.com/warranty) lists US prices for your model.

How much does out-of-warranty service cost for your device or accessory?

The other routes are Microsoft in-region repair and Authorized Service Providers. In some regions Microsoft also has service centers that provide in-person support. For a local option, check the Authorized Service Provider list on Microsoft's support site.

How to get service or repair for Surface

If the Surface turns on while plugged in, backing up and erasing your data before shipping is recommended.

If the portal doesn't offer a battery option for your unit, contact Microsoft Support through the Contact Us page or the Get Help app and ask them to open the order.
