Reoccurring To-Dos and Planner Tasks

I guess this is more of an idea request or something. With Microsoft Planner and To-Do, which both I find extremely useful for my workers and love, the reoccurring tasks and scheduling due dates and such is awesome, but can we make it so it doesn't automatically reappear? For instance I have a daily battle rhythm, and I check them in the morning when I'm done and they're just still there because it comes right back. Which in a sense kind of defeats the purpose to me in making it a task.

Maybe something like, (outside daily tasks) when you complete a reoccurring task, when should it reappear kind of prompt? I know very small very minute problem, nobody probably uses these. I am just a very routine kind of guy.

    Hi @Zach Brown

Thank you for sharing this idea. I understand that you use recurring tasks in Microsoft Planner and Microsoft To Do for your daily routine. However, when you complete a daily task in the morning, the next occurrence appears immediately, which makes it feel as though the task was never actually cleared from your list.

In Planner, this is currently expected behaviour. Planner displays the current occurrence of a recurring task, and once it is marked as completed, the next scheduled occurrence is created automatically.

The option such as “When should this task reappear?” could make recurring tasks more flexible. For example, users might choose whether the next occurrence should appear immediately, on its scheduled date, or at a specified time. This would be particularly useful for daily routines where users want a clear sense of completion before the next occurrence becomes visible.

Since this appears to be a feature request rather than a technical issue, I recommend submitting the suggestion through the Feedback Portal. This allows the product team to review the idea and lets other users support it as well.

In the meantime, one possible workaround is to use a non-recurring daily task template and create or copy the next task only when needed. However, I understand that this removes some of the convenience of automatic recurrence. Your request is reasonable and could improve recurring-task workflows for users who rely on Planner and To Do for structured daily routines.

    Thank you for you contribution.

Planner recurring tasks are designed to show only the current occurrence, and when that task is marked complete, the next scheduled occurrence is created automatically. There is no supported setting in the provided documentation to complete a recurring Planner task without the next one reappearing.

For Planner, the supported behavior is:

    1. Open the task in Board view.
    2. Set Start date and Due date.
    3. Use Repeat to choose Daily, Weekdays, Weekly, Monthly, Yearly, or Custom.
    4. When the current task is completed, the next instance is created automatically.
    5. If the Due date is removed, recurrence is removed and the series is discontinued.

That means the closest built-in option in Planner is to stop using recurrence for tasks where immediate reappearance is not wanted, or remove the due date to discontinue the recurring series.

For Microsoft To Do, the provided content only confirms that repeating a task every day causes it to be suggested again in My Day each morning. No setting is documented here for delaying when a completed recurring To Do task reappears.

So, based on the available information, the requested behavior is not currently documented as a built-in option in Planner or To Do.
