Try the following steps to troubleshoot and reduce the black-screen issue when using docks with the Surface Laptop:
- Use the graphics reset shortcut when it happens
When the laptop display goes black or nearly black, press:
Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B
This resets the graphics driver and often restores the display without needing Win+Tab. - Check and cycle display modes
The issue can be related to Windows switching display modes when a dock/external monitor is connected. When the screen goes black or after reconnecting the dock:- Press Windows logo key + P
- Press P again and then Enter to cycle through modes (PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, Second screen only) until the built-in display behaves correctly.
- Basic blank/black screen troubleshooting
If the screen stays black or blank:- Make sure the Surface and dock are powered and all cables are firmly connected.
- Try disconnecting the dock, wait a few seconds, then reconnect it.
- If the device becomes unresponsive, perform a force restart by holding the power button for about 20 seconds, then power it back on.
- Troubleshoot external monitor/dock behavior
Since the issue appears only when using docks, also check the external display path:- With the dock connected, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver if the external or internal display goes black.
- If the setup was working and suddenly started failing, restart the Surface (Start > Power > Restart). If that doesn’t help, shut down completely and power it back on.
- Surface-specific display help
If the problem persists across multiple docks and displays, use the Surface display troubleshooting guidance to narrow down whether it’s a Surface display/driver issue versus a dock or monitor issue. The Surface support content links to:- Troubleshooting blank/black screens on Surface.
- Troubleshooting connecting Surface to an external display (including clearing display cache and verifying dock behavior).
If, after these steps, the screen still randomly goes black only when docked, collect details (frequency, which dock, which ports, whether external monitor also blanks) and contact Microsoft Surface support for deeper hardware/driver diagnostics.
