A customizable group messaging space within the GroupMe app, designed for seamless communication among friends, classmates, teams, or communities.
GroupMe accounts are tied to the email address and/or phone number used. When a password reset is done on an email/phone that is not correctly associated with the original account, a new account can be created and the phone number becomes linked to that new account instead of the old one. That makes existing chats appear to be “gone” because the sign-in is now to a different account.
To proceed:
- Try signing in with any other email/phone combinations previously used with GroupMe (including Apple ID sign-in if that was ever used):
- Open GroupMe.
- On the sign-in screen, choose the method originally used (email/phone, or Sign in with Apple if applicable).
- If using Apple ID, follow the steps in “How do I sign in to GroupMe with my Apple ID?” to ensure the same Apple ID and email-sharing choice are used as when the original account was created.
- If the original account is found, the old chats should reappear under that account. The phone number may still be attached to the new account; only one account can be associated with a mobile number, so the number would need to be disassociated from the new account and associated back to the original account by support.
- If the original account cannot be accessed with any known credentials, or the phone number is stuck on the new account, contact GroupMe support so they can review the account details and help with restoring access where possible:
- Use the Contact us link from the GroupMe help pages to reach support and provide the original phone number, any email addresses used, and a description of when the issue started.
If the password itself is forgotten for the original account but the correct email/phone is known, use the official reset flow for that specific account:
- Go to the Forgot Password page.
- Enter the email address or phone number associated with the original account.
- Select Reset password and follow the instructions.
If the reset again signs in only to the new account or the original account still cannot be reached, direct assistance from GroupMe support is required; self-service options are limited once the phone number is attached to a different account.
