Hi!
I need help troubleshooting a charging/battery issue on a Microsoft Surface Pro 8. The device is connected to power (both with the original charger and via USB-C PD charging), but Windows continues to show 0% battery and the battery does not charge. Several Surface/firmware updates fail because the system battery is too low, which seems to create a “catch-22”. The battery has not degraded from heavy use and the reports show that computer has been used very little.
Windows shows 0% battery while indicating it is plugged in / on AC power.
Windows Update lists Surface Driver Updates that cannot proceed and asks to connect/charge the device.
In the device properties, the error message states that the firmware update failed due to power requirements and that the system battery is not sufficiently charged to update the firmware (Code 14 / requires restart shown as well).
Some Surface firmware/driver components require a minimum battery charge to install firmware updates safely. However, because the battery appears stuck at 0%, the required firmware updates never install, and the device remains in this state.
A) Autopilot / enrollment checks (to rule out management issues)
I queried Windows registry Autopilot provisioning keys and also ran dsregcmd /status.
The output indicates the device is not Azure AD joined / not domain joined (AzureAdJoined: NO, DomainJoined: NO, EnterpriseJoined: NO; WorkplaceJoined: NO).
So this does not appear to be an enrollment/autopilot lock issue.
B) Battery report
I generated a Windows battery report with powercfg /batteryreport.
The report shows Design Capacity and Full Charge Capacity are the same, suggesting the battery has not degraded from heavy use (i.e., the device appears to have been used very little).
Despite that, it still stays at 0% when plugged in.
C) Charging attempts
Tested with the original Surface charger: still shows 0% (plugged in).
Tested USB-C charging using a thick USB-C cable and a USB-C charger: behavior is the same (0%, plugged in).
I do not see any change indicating actual charging (no increase in percentage, no progress).
D) Device Manager
Can it be a hardware issue (battery failure, charge circuit, port/PD controller, internal connector), or a firmware/driver issue that can be resolved through manual installation of Surface drivers/firmware, or a specific recovery procedure?
If needed, I can provide a full list of the Surface components showing warnings and the exact error codes/messages.
I'd be very grateful for any advice!
/Mia

It sounds like you're experiencing a complex issue with your Surface Pro 8 where the battery is not charging despite being connected to power. Here are some troubleshooting steps and considerations:
If these steps do not resolve the issue, it may be necessary to consider professional repair options, especially if hardware failure is suspected.
