Upgrade through Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates, then select Download and install when Windows 11 is offered.
Before upgrading
- Check compatibility
- Search the taskbar for PC Health Check.
- Open it and select Check now.
- If it is not installed, download the PC Health Check app.
- The result identifies whether the PC meets Windows 11 requirements and explains any failed checks. A compatibility safeguard may temporarily prevent installation when Microsoft has identified an incompatible app or driver. ^1^
- Back up important files
- Copy essential files to OneDrive, an external drive, or another backup location.
- An upgrade normally transfers files and data into Windows 11, but Microsoft recommends backing them up first. ^2^
- Install Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- If Windows 11 is ready, select Download and install.
- Keep the PC connected to power and follow the prompts. Windows Update validates the device before offering the upgrade. ^3^
Cost
The upgrade from an eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 PC that meets the minimum hardware requirements is free. Your internet provider could still charge for data if the connection is metered. ^4^
A separate Windows 11 license may be required if the computer does not have a qualifying Windows installation or if Windows is not activated. You can check activation under Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
If Windows 11 is not offered
- If PC Health Check says the PC is eligible, wait until Windows Update indicates that Windows 11 is ready. Microsoft may withhold it temporarily because of a compatibility safeguard.
- If the PC is not eligible, review the failed requirement in PC Health Check. Windows 11 requires, among other items, a compatible 64-bit processor, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, UEFI with Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0. ^5^
- If this is a work- or school-managed PC, contact its IT administrator rather than installing the upgrade independently.
