How can I get erroneous contacts to not show up when I search for a contact in New Outlook?

Using New Outlook. I have some emails with incorrectly typed addresses. How can I get those to go away when I search my contacts? For instance, I typed [moderator's note: PII removed]@gmail.com (instead of [moderator's note: PII removed]@gmail.com once upon a time, and now when I search for [customer's first name], I see this email address even when I delete it.

There is a way for you to salvage any Suggested People/Autocomplete Suggestions that you want to keep (as Contacts) and then clear the cache so you won't see the incorrect entries any more.

Although this answer seems correct, it points out a functionality issue with New Outlook. I'm disappointed.

Not sure exactly what you are referring to.

If you mean that Microsoft has removed the ability to delete a single entry from the Suggested People/Autocomplete Suggestions, then you can Vote for this Feature Request to revert this change:

    Hi Elbarcolutra,

I understand the disappointment. Being able to remove one incorrectly remembered address without disabling all contact suggestions would be a reasonable and useful option.

Since the available workarounds do not provide consistent control over an individual suggestion in every account configuration, this appears to be a limitation in how New Outlook currently manages remembered recipients. This is a user-to-user support forum, so contributors here cannot change or directly escalate the product’s functionality.

I recommend submitting this through Help > Feedback in New Outlook and describing that the incorrect address remains searchable even after the related contact has been deleted. Feedback submitted from within the app can include diagnostic information and is sent to the appropriate Outlook product team: Contact support and provide feedback in New Outlook for Windows.

Thank you for pointing out this limitation. Feedback like this helps highlight where New Outlook’s contact-management experience still needs improvement. Thank you so much for your understanding.

The mistyped address is likely a remembered recipient rather than a saved contact, so for a personal Microsoft account, disable People suggestions from the Microsoft account Privacy page.^1^

    Remove remembered suggestions

For the Outlook.com/Hotmail/Microsoft account used by New Outlook:

    1. Open the Microsoft account Privacy page and sign in with that account.
    2. Scroll to Empower your productivity.
    3. Select People suggestions.
    4. Set the toggle to Off.
    5. Close and reopen New Outlook, then search for the name again.

This is broader than removing one address: it disables suggested-contact information for that account across Microsoft services where the information is used. Saved personal contacts and organization-directory contacts can still appear.^1^

If an X appears beside the incorrect address while composing a message, it can be tried to remove that individual suggestion. However, Microsoft’s current New Outlook guidance does not document that as a consistently available removal method; use the account-level control above if the X is absent or the address returns.

    Check for another saved contact

Deleting one contact does not remove a remembered address, but the incorrect address could also exist in another contact:

    1. In New Outlook, select People on the left.
    2. Search for the incorrect email address itself, not only the person’s name.
    3. If another contact contains it, select the contact and choose Delete, or edit it to retain the contact with the corrected address.

These are the New Outlook-specific contact deletion steps.^2^

If this is a work or school account

Use the Microsoft 365 account controls instead:

    1. Open Settings & Privacy for the work or school account.
    2. Select Privacy.
    3. Under Data options, expand Manage contact suggestions and discovery.
    4. Under Discovered contacts, select Clear data to remove information learned from communications.
    5. Optionally set Discovered contacts to Off to prevent further capture and ranking.

Clearing this data does not delete personal contacts or entries in the organization’s Global Address List. Personal contacts must be deleted from People; organizational directory entries can be changed only by the organization’s administrator.^1^^2^
