There is no supported direct in-place upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 11; if the computer qualifies, back up your data and perform a clean installation from Windows 11 USB media using a newly purchased Windows 11 license.
1. Check compatibility before buying Windows 11
Most computers originally supplied with Windows 7 are too old for Windows 11, but check the exact hardware rather than buying a license first.
- In Windows 7, select Start, type
msinfo32, and press Enter. - Record System Manufacturer, System Model, Processor, Installed Physical Memory, and BIOS Mode.
- Check the computer manufacturer’s support page for that exact model, including whether Windows 11 drivers are available.
- Compare the hardware with these minimum requirements:
- Compatible 64-bit processor, 1 GHz or faster, with at least two cores
- 4 GB RAM
- 64 GB storage
- UEFI firmware capable of Secure Boot
- TPM 2.0
- DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver ^1^
Microsoft’s PC Health Check is another eligibility tool, but its documented eligibility check is intended for computers currently running Windows 10—not Windows 7. ^2^
If the processor, TPM, Secure Boot, or driver requirements are not met, replacing the computer with one supplied with Windows 11 is generally the supported route. Installing Windows 11 using hardware-requirement bypasses is not recommended.
2. Cost and licensing
The discontinued Windows 7 free-upgrade route can no longer be used to obtain Windows 10 or Windows 11 at no cost. ^3^
Therefore, unless the computer already has a valid Windows 11 digital license, purchase:
- The Windows 11 edition you need, such as Home or Pro; or
- A new computer that includes Windows 11.
A Windows 7 product key does not provide the current free-upgrade path. The exact price depends on the edition, country, seller, and whether Windows is included with a new computer. Microsoft documents that a retail or digital Windows 11 purchase is activated using either its product key or digital license. ^4^
3. Install Windows 11 if the PC qualifies
A clean installation removes the existing Windows installation, applications, and potentially all files on the selected drive.
- Back up and verify your files. Copy documents, pictures, browser data, email archives, and other important files to external storage or cloud storage. Microsoft recommends backing up before installing a new Windows version. ^5^
- On another working computer, use Microsoft’s Create installation media for Windows instructions to create a bootable Windows 11 USB drive. The USB creation process erases that drive, so copy anything important from it first.
- Connect the USB drive to the Windows 7 computer.
- Restart the computer and open its one-time boot menu. The key varies by manufacturer, so check the computer’s manual or support page.
- Select the USB device to start Windows Setup.
- Choose a custom/clean installation, select the intended system drive carefully, and install the edition matching the Windows 11 license you purchased.
- Enter the Windows 11 product key when requested. Microsoft’s documented setup process uses the key to select and install the corresponding edition. ^6^
- After setup, reinstall applications, install manufacturer drivers, run Windows Update, and restore your backed-up files.
- Confirm activation under Start → Settings → System → Activation.
If the PC fails the compatibility check, do not buy a standalone Windows 11 license for it; put that cost toward a compatible computer with Windows 11 included.
