One Drive Personal highjacking files from One Drive Business

I switched from Personal One Drive to Business several years ago. The personal One Drive was not deleted. It is now storing files that I want to save in One Drive and I cannot open those files. I need a callback from a one drive support human.

    Dear Terry,

As a forum moderator, I genuinely wish I could directly check your OneDrive accounts or sync settings to diagnose and fix this for you. Unfortunately, my role here is limited to providing general guidance and solutions that can be applied by users. This usually happens when both your personal and business accounts are still signed in to the OneDrive app on the same PC. Each account has its own folder in File Explorer, usually "OneDrive - Personal" and "OneDrive - [Your Organization]". If you save to the personal one, files end up in your old account. The files may not open if that account is signed out or not syncing properly. To fix it, you can try these steps:

    • Check the folders: In File Explorer, look for both OneDrive folders in the left pane and confirm which one your files are in.
    • Open the files online: Sign in at onedrive.com with your personal Microsoft account and see if the files open there.
    • Move the files: Download them from your personal OneDrive, then upload them to your business OneDrive.
    • Unlink the personal account: After your files are safe, select the OneDrive icon in the taskbar, then go to Settings > Account, select the personal account and choose Unlink this PC.

If the files still won't open after this, I recommend that the Global Admin in your organization create a service request with Microsoft Support. For detailed instructions on how to get support, please refer to Get support - Microsoft 365 admin. If you don't know who your IT administrator is, please refer to this article: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

For additional assistance, use this link to find the appropriate contact number from your region: Contact Microsoft customer support | Microsoft Support

I truly hope you get your issue resolved swiftly. Please know that even though I can't directly intervene, directing you to the correct, specialized support is the most effective help I can provide from my position. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Please let me know if you need anything else. Wishing you all the best.

Request a Microsoft support callback through Contact Microsoft Support, while preserving the affected files and unlinking only the Personal account after verifying which OneDrive account owns them.

    Request human support

    1. Open Contact Microsoft Support.
    2. Sign in with the Personal Microsoft account currently holding the inaccessible files.
    3. Enter a description such as:
“Personal OneDrive is receiving files intended for OneDrive for Business, and those files cannot be opened.”
    4. Select Get Help, then Contact Support.
    5. Choose OneDrive and Technical support, then select Call me back if that option is offered. Available contact methods can vary by account, region, and time. Microsoft’s documented route is Get Help → Contact Support, which directs the request to an available support option.^1^

If this is primarily a Business-account issue:

    • An employee should contact the organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator or IT helpdesk.
    • A Microsoft 365 administrator can use the Microsoft 365 for business support option listed in Microsoft’s OneDrive support guidance.^2^

A Microsoft Learn Q&A post cannot create a support ticket or arrange a callback.

Preserve the files before changing accounts

Do not delete or move the affected files yet, because a synchronized deletion or move can also be applied in the cloud.

    1. Open OneDrive on the web in a private browser window.
    2. Sign in first with the Personal account and locate the affected files.
    3. Download copies of any files that open from the website to a normal local folder outside both OneDrive folders.
    4. Sign out, then repeat with the Business/work account to determine which cloud account actually contains each file.
    5. If a file has a blue cloud icon in File Explorer, it is online-only and cannot open without an Internet connection and a working connection to the account that owns it.^3^

If the files open on the website but not in File Explorer, right-click a test file and select Always keep on this device. A successful download changes it to a locally available file, which can then be opened offline.^4^

Identify and disconnect the Personal account

    On Windows:

    1. Select each OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
    2. Select Help & Settings → Settings → Account.
    3. Identify the Personal account and Business account from the account names shown. The Business OneDrive normally displays the organization name in its status entry.^5^
    4. After preserving the files, select the Personal account only, then choose Unlink this PC → Unlink account.
    5. Leave the Business account connected.

Unlinking disconnects the local folder from its cloud account; it does not delete cloud or local data.^6^ Afterward, ensure new files are saved inside the folder named for the organization, not the old Personal OneDrive folder.

If the accounts cannot be distinguished confidently, stop before unlinking and provide support with:

    • The account name shown under each OneDrive Account tab
    • The full local folder path containing an affected file
    • The file’s status icon
    • The exact error shown when opening it
    • Whether it opens from Personal OneDrive or Business OneDrive on the web
