A family of Microsoft presentation graphics products that offer tools for creating presentations and adding graphic effects like multimedia objects and special effects with text.
Run an Online Repair of Microsoft 365 or Office rather than relying on the Repair Now button in the PowerPoint error dialog.
Run Online Repair
- Close PowerPoint and all other Office applications.
- Open the repair screen:
- Windows 11: Right-click Start → Installed apps.
- Windows 10: Right-click Start → Apps and Features.
- Find Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or standalone PowerPoint.
- Select the three dots or the application, and then select Modify.
- If prompted for administrator permission, select Yes.
- For a Click-to-Run installation, select Online Repair → Repair.
If only an MSI repair option appears, select Repair → Continue. - Complete the process, restart Windows if prompted, and open PowerPoint again.
Online Repair is more comprehensive than Quick Repair and repairs the entire Office suite, even when only PowerPoint is failing.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/office/-something-went-wrong-error-when-you-try-to-start-a-microsoft-365-app-4b4471dd-cf86-4a37-910d-35a01a6c7d17 ""Something went wrong" error when you try to start a Microsoft 365 app") The same procedure resolved matching cases where the error-dialog repair did not work.^2^
If PowerPoint still fails
Test whether an add-in is preventing startup:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
powerpnt /safe - Select OK.
- If PowerPoint opens and its title bar shows Safe Mode, go to: File → Options → Add-ins.
- At the bottom, choose COM Add-ins under Manage, then select Go.
- Clear all add-in checkboxes and restart PowerPoint normally.
- If it works, re-enable add-ins one at a time, restarting PowerPoint after each one, to identify the incompatible add-in.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/office/lifecycle/i-get-a-stopped-working-error-when-i-start-office-applications-on-my-pc "I get a "stopped working" error when I start Office applications on my PC | Microsoft Support")
If PowerPoint does not open in Safe Mode, the problem is not caused by add-ins. After Online Repair, Microsoft’s next documented paths are to update Windows and device drivers, then uninstall and reinstall Office if the failure continues.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/office/lifecycle/i-get-a-stopped-working-error-when-i-start-office-applications-on-my-pc "I get a "stopped working" error when I start Office applications on my PC | Microsoft Support")
