My MS Word recently started NOT reading or allowing me to open up my documents. Each and every time and each document I try to open gives this message: User's image

The d.docs.live.net location indicates that the affected documents are in OneDrive. If you sign in to your OneDrive account online, at https://onedrive.live.com , can you open the files from there, using your web browser?

Also, can you download a document and then open it in your locally installed version of Word?

The documents are being opened through a OneDrive d.docs.live.net address, so start the OneDrive desktop app and let it finish signing in and syncing before reopening them.

    1. Restart the OneDrive connection

    1. Close Word.
    2. Select Start, type OneDrive, and open the OneDrive desktop app.
    3. If prompted, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns these documents.
    4. Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the Windows notification area and wait until it reports that syncing is complete.
    5. Open File Explorer → OneDrive, then try opening a document from that folder.

Microsoft specifically recommends starting the OneDrive desktop app when Windows reports that a OneDrive-backed file cannot be opened or that OneDrive is not running.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/onedrive/troubleshoot-the-can-t-open-file-error-in-onedrive "Troubleshoot the "Can’t open file" error in OneDrive | Microsoft Support")

    2. Test the document directly from OneDrive online

Sign in at OneDrive, locate one affected document, and:

    1. Try Open → Open in Word for the web.
    2. If it opens online, select Download.
    3. Open the downloaded copy from the Downloads folder.

A downloadable copy from OneDrive is the recommended workaround when the synchronized copy will not open.^2^

The result identifies the relevant fallback:

    • Online and downloaded copies open: the documents are intact, and the local OneDrive connection needs repair.
    • The downloaded copy also fails: proceed to the Office repair section.
    • The document fails online as well: preserve the exact online error. The problem is not confined to the Word desktop connection.

    3. If files open online, reset OneDrive

Resetting OneDrive does not delete the files, but it resets its settings and performs a full synchronization.^3^

    1. Press Windows+R.
    2. Enter:
    %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

    1. Select OK.
    2. If Windows cannot find it, try:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

    1. If that also fails, try:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

    1. Select Start, search for OneDrive, and open it manually.
    2. Wait for synchronization to finish, then retry the files from File Explorer → OneDrive.

If only selected folders were synchronized previously, those folder selections may need to be configured again after the reset.

    4. If downloaded local files also fail, repair Microsoft 365

This branch applies when Word cannot open a newly downloaded local copy—not only the d.docs.live.net version.

    • Windows 11: right-click Start → Installed apps → Microsoft 365 → … → Modify.
    • Windows 10: right-click Start → Apps and Features → Microsoft 365 → Modify.
    • Choose Online Repair → Repair, complete the prompts, and restart Windows.

Online Repair is the more thorough repair option and repairs the entire Office installation, including Word.^4^

Do not begin with Open and Repair for every document. That command is intended for individual damaged files; because every document is failing through a OneDrive URL, the OneDrive connection should be addressed first.^5^
