I had an excel spreadsheet built by copilot and now it has programmed formulas in cells that I want deleted but it won't allow. How do I clear the preloaded data/formulas?

Hi, first open Review >> Unprotect Sheet, if that option appears. Enter the sheet’s password if prompted.

Then select the cells you want to empty >> Home >> Clear >> Clear Contents. This removes the data and formulas while keeping the cell formatting.

If Excel still won’t allow it, please share the exact error message or a screenshot, especially if it mentions “part of an array.”

Select the formula’s complete range—not an individual result cell—and press Delete; if Excel says that part of an array cannot be changed, use Go To Special → Current array first.

    Remove the formulas

    1. Click one cell containing a formula you want removed.
    2. If it is a normal formula, press Delete. This removes both the formula and its displayed result.^1^
    3. To remove formulas from a specific area:
      • Select that area.
      • Go to Home → Find & Select → Go To Special.
      • Select Formulas, then OK.
      • Press Delete.
Go To Special selects formula cells without selecting manually entered constants.^2^

To clear formulas and formatting, select the cells and choose Home → Clear → Clear All. To retain the formatting, use Clear Contents instead.^3^

If Excel will not let you delete an individual cell

The formula may be an array formula that controls multiple cells.

    • Dynamic/spilled array: Select the top-left cell of the outlined spill range and press Delete. Only that first cell is editable; the other displayed formulas are ghosted results.^4^
    • Legacy multi-cell array:
      1. Select any cell in the array.
      2. Choose Home → Find & Select → Go To → Special.
      3. Select Current array.
      4. Press Delete.
Excel does not permit deleting only part of a legacy array.^1^

Keep the current results but remove the formulas

If the calculated values should remain:

    1. Select the formula cells—or the complete array range.
    2. Press Ctrl+C.
    3. Choose Home → Paste ▼ → Paste Values.

This replaces each formula with its current displayed value.^1^

    If deletion is still blocked

Check Review → Unprotect Sheet. A protected worksheet prevents changes to locked cells; if prompted, the protection password is required.^5^

If the password is unknown, obtain it from whoever created or protected the workbook. Copilot-created formulas do not require a separate Copilot deletion process once they are in worksheet cells.
